Offroad VW based vehicles have problems/insights all their own. Not to mention the knowledge gained in VW durability.

Minimizing Gear Reduction Hop.

Hey everybody:

My Baja has laydown gear reduction adaptors and I would like to minimize the rear wheel hop as much as possible.

It's not a big problem. I have run upright adaptors in the past and the wheel hop was awful. It's more like just a lift during accelleration with the laydown adaptors. I have also used "no-hop" adaptors in the past but they are not very durable for hard off-roading.

Not many people use this old technology anymore. I would like to know if stiffer shocks, more shocks or stiffer torsion bars would help.

I don't plan to convert to IRS so please don't reply with the usual "hey why don't you convert to IRS?" :wink:

Hiya Charles :D , Even with the laydown kits like John Johnson(now retired to baja living in a boat offshore) used to make, he recommended not-hop bars. A lot of the early baja racers used gear redux boxes and didn't have a lot of trouble with them if set up right. You have to beef up the torsion housing where they weld on. Good Luck, Ol' John 8)

Charles you know the answer! There is only one cure! You know what it is! Why continue to beat yourself up with OLD technology when there is something so much better? Stiffer shocks and/or torsion bars will make it worse and multiple shocks can't tame it! That is the reason no one races that setup anymore and very few even bother to use it.

Softer shocks?

In the 2.5 months since I posted that message, I blew up the tranny doing an uphill burnout over a pothole. Trashed first gear and something else in there.

As soon as finances permit, I plan to have a new stronger gear reduction tranny built for it. The last gear reduction Baja will live again!

redux box no hop

Charles, Charles, Charles, :roll: You know you can't abuse your gear box. For what it takes to get it beefed up/rebuilt, just put in a bus IRS box and get over it. I live in a small NV town and know of 2 redux setups here. Both cars I had. I'm now in the process of building a link/pin front and a bus IRS rear. Nothing real fancy, but I don't abuse the equipment. We had a couple of guys in Bakersfield that would break their redux box cars every time they went out, because they abused them. Work on them for the next couple of weeks and go out and do it again. Please do listen to GDRBO and myself and save yourself a lot of time and money in the long run. When I said put the no-hop bars back on and beef it a bit, I didn't know you used your car like that. Besides why did you need 1st gear going up a hill for a burnout :?: :?: Just curious. Ol' John 8)

Actually, this gear reduction setup has taken alot of punishment over the past 11 years on the street and off-road.

It was one foolish move that finally broke it. The move I made may have even damaged an IRS Bus tranny.

Anyway, I have considered an IRS conversion. It would be pricey because I would also have to have a new rear bumper cage and aluminum skid plate made as well as purchasing the conversion parts.

We'll see.

I had that setup in my Manx when I first got it on the road. Funny how the back of the car jumps up when you get on the gas.

I never got it to work satisfactory, and it was always a weak link, though the ground clearance is awesome. But if you layed yours down, I would just swap it out for a junkyard swingaxle with long axles. I tried all sorts of things to stop the wheel hop, but was never really sucessful.

BTW, some people will pay good money for those old parts.

Perhaps the added weight of a Corvair engine would reduce the wheel hop. :wink:

I just happen to have an extra Corvair engine lying around the garage. :o
