Dremel tool for porting?

Post by 1961bluebug »

I want to practice porting and polishing a little bit (on my old heads) and I´m thinking about using a DREMEL MultiPro 395PR tool. They are selling a nice set of equipment too. Is this a good choice? Anybody have a pics of their polished heads (except CLF)?

You can buy a mini die grinder at Home Depot for $25, and if you have a compressor you can do the porting and polishing that way. I use this one and it works great. I tried using dremel type tools, but nothing compares to a die grinder.

Standard Abrasives sells DIY porting and polishing kits that are great for VW heads.

In between the Dremel and the die grinder would probably be a 3/8" variable speed electric drill with carbide-tip cutting tools (www.mcmaster.com). Whatever you use, WEAR SAFETY GOGGLES!

They say you shouldnt polish heads on a carberated engine. The fuel wont tumble well enough with the air in a polished head. All I did on my heads were port the crap out of them. You should only polish on fuel injected engines..
