I drive a bus. I want a torguey motor. I know everyone now a days is saying "lightened FW", "CW Crank", 42X37 big valve heads w P/P etc.. blah blah blah. But what is the truth? I know I want to stay with 90.5s for cooling reasons but what will make alot of torque? thanks

All these things you listed are about the exact opposite of what is needed to produce torque.
There has been a lot of discussion on the bus barn about this subject. Good luck. Bob ingman

If you want a torque monster here are some recommendations for you (type 1 not type 4)
Stroker, I would go with an 82mm crank with stock length rods, and the stroker 90.5 pistons. This would give you a displacement of 2110cc.
Set the compression to 7.5:1 (this will make for a good cool running engine)
I'm not that much of a torque guy myself, so I'm not too positive on the cam selection, but you would want to go with something that has LOW duration and a moderate to high amount of lift. You should give WebCam or CBperformance a call on this one. I have had really good results with the webcam stuff, I personally like them better than the engle stuff. CB has a cam called the ghost rider or something like that that developed good torque (used in odd raod engines)
Exhaust, Don't go too big here, Maybe a 1 1/2 inch merged header or something like that.
Carbs. If you are after primarily torque, get a SINGLE 40 or 44 Weber IDF carb. The long runners of the single carb setup will make a lot more torque than the short type of intake used on the dual carb setups.
hope this helps!

I forgot the heads, oops.
You could get away with some MILD heads, with relatively small valves. Porting is not that crucial here, but any polishing of the ports will help out.

Here' something you don't hear too often: Get a set of single port heads. Single ports flow with less volume, but greater velocity which makes them GREAT torque heads. Also for an application like a bus, the SP head an take a hell of a lot more abuse and overheating without warping or cracking (actually I've never seen a SP head crack except from things like dropped valves and seats).

Gotta agree with the single ports for torque.
Small valves=torque
Big valves = High RPM
Just a matter of adjusting where in the RPM range do you wish to make your power. Down low or at top . Bob Ingman

Stock weight flywheel, Kadrons (much better in cold weather than a single carb), Engle W100 cam with 1.25:1 rockers or WebCam #111. If you stroke it to 2110, wedgemate the flywheel, and use stock DP heads with a 1 1/2" header. If you don't want to stroke it, SP heads would be better on a 1776, and use a 1 3/8" header.

If you want torque, T4 is the thing. I have run 2L T1 and 2L 914 engine in my 67 bus. In my case the T4 engine was way better up the hills. Both were way better than 1600.

thanks all. I want a decent motor for my bus and have seen all the talk of this and that but have recently talked with a few guys who knew differently eg., the single port thing developing torgue and wanted to see if thats right. sounds right..I really love the idea of a 2007 or 2110 motor that will give me some down low power. I have a 1600 SP. Do they make dual kadrons with SP manifolds?
thx again.
thx again.

66 split The single port Kad manifolds are getting hard to find. I have a friend with a pr. If you get serious let me know. I`ll put you in touch. Good luck. Bob Ingman
