What would the ideal deck height be on a hi performance engine? I built a 2165 and my deck height is .043 I just added .010 barrel shims. any info would be great.

I like it as tight as I can get it. every engine I build gets less than .050, my engine runs at .032 and turns 6500RPM daily,

When the squash area between the piston & the head is small/thin the VW air cooled motor will produce more HP but will require a better grade of fuel for a given compression ratio. So If the gas is not the best its better for to have a wider or thicker squash area. And the compression ratio depends on the Fuel, Timing used. Vic.

Engine goes in a street legal rail, I raced it once last summer got two runs then I blew 1st gear. I want to use this for a race/street motor.

I'd get some heads with some bigger valves, 40 35.5 or 42 37 with about 54 cc's and run the deck about .045. I haven't run the calcualator on that but is sounds about right. Tim
