Reassembling my engine and went to install the dist. drive gear. The Bug-Me video says to put it in on an offset so that when it rotates as it seats, it will seat with the slot parallel w/the crank pulley.
The Idiot book doesn't give as detailed instructions, but shows the seated position identically.
No matter what I do I cannot get this thing to seat so the slot is straight across. I've probably done it 40 times and the slot is still offset- sort of pointing towards no. 1. What the hell is going on here? Is this okay?
My inclination is just to leave it as is and rearrange the spark plug wires when I get to that part of assembly.
Thanks

Distributor drive gear installation
I install the drive gear and distributor before the crank goes in, set it to where it should point, and then drop the crank in, holding #1 rod up. Then it is set at TDC, and it is easy to install the dist shims with the case open.
This is after all the checking and prep work!

Okay, maybe the next engine I build I will do that way; but right now my engine has already been buttoned up and I'm trying to get it finished.
How about my slot alignment?
Thanks

I have found that you must drop the gear in just slightly less then the 90 degrees the books show and when it's correct it will be slightly past (clockwise)the 90 degrees. Vic

believe it or not; i went to school per vw in 69. we were tough to install the drive gear after the case was together. install the shime with a grease coating on each side. this will hold it in place. face the slot just to the rear of the rear fuel pump stud. slide it down till it stops. use a screw driver and rotate it to the right it will drop in (hopfully). it should be pointing between the two studs. before you do it again hold your dizzy as if it were in the case. with the rotor on #1 mark, check the drive lug. some time i think those guys were on drugs when they wrote those books. mostly the idiot book that guy had some real goood drugs. even if it's off it will still time right

Sandtowd or anyone that knows, Question for ya?
I Pulled my dist # 043 905 205H a dual vacuum apart, to clean and polished the case, I was putting it back together and relised that the drive lug hole, is 90 degs to all my 009's that I have! Can you tell me if the rotor is suppose to point northeast, or southwest, I pulled the dist out of a "76 FI 1600. How come it doen't point southeast like the 009's I have?

i've never had my hands on a dual vac before. the only ones i,ve point any other than southeast is a t3. they should sit in the case with the condenser on the rear left. ofcourse rotor pointing to the mark on the dis housing. which would be south east. i dont have any books that cover vw's that new. the turbo forum talk about duals a lot
