crankcase ventilation

I have a fairly new 1776 with a counterweighted crank.I am experiencing some oil " leakage around the fuel pump. Reseal a nd tighten does no good; still leals but only at fast highway speeds (above 3500 rpm. I have read a few comments recommending venting the valve covers. to alieviate crankcase pulsations especially with counterweighted cranks. There are even those who say that there iis a noticable hp increase. What is the experience out there??? If its recommended, what is the best method???

Yes you need a breather box on that motor.A bigger motor is making more crankcase pressure.And that presuure has to go somewhere.And that's way you keep blowing out seals.Do it soon before you do more damage to the motor

I would actually be interested in anyone's answers to this as well for my (currently not running) 1915cc. Pros and Cons? I know everyone says to brae/weld in the valve cover fittings because they'll leak otherwise. What about brands or models, any recommendations? Power gains? Will it do my dishes?

Is there a best method of doing this???
How is the breather box constructed??? Other than the valve cover vents, what else connects to this box??? Does it contain any baffels??? etc, etc???

The cheap breather boxes are simple collectors of the vapor. They have no drain back and the only filter is a peice of foam.

The better ones are breather towers. These generally mount to the oil filler and have baffles that seperate the oil from the vapor and allow it to drain back into the engine. These cost more, but do a better job.

I have a Berg breather tower, but CB and others also make them.

You get what you pay for.

Hi Ched,
I also recomend a breather box. I installed the EMPI brand box, everything is included, allm. box,fittings,and hose. NOTE: throw away the hose that comes with the kit(KINKS)and use a good quality rubber hose. A cheap install that can save $$$.

The Berg tower is the best, maybe I'll buy one someday or make one. I use a cheap one that that I have ground off the tits, tossed the foam and sealed it up and mounted on the firewall on its side. The lowest hose drains back into the stock baffle/oil fill, middle are used for the VC's and the highest one goes into my air filter right above #3 barrel on the carb.

A guy I know does serious autocrossing and he built a collector/catch can that mounts in the car just below the rear window. It's sealed and the vapor returns to the carb. When racing he collects several oz. of oil in the can. I told him to mount a return line back to the crankcase but he has a petcock and he just drains it each run.

I like the breather tower. Does this have a conection to the air cleaner? I like the idea of venting all of the fumes to the air cleaner
