spring plates

Offroad VW based vehicles have problems/insights all their own. Not to mention the knowledge gained in VW durability.

Anyone know how I can use swing axle torsions in an IRS rear end? I am looking to get rid of the irs spring plate tube so I can run my paddles. Also does anyone have first hand experience with Kennedy adapters? I am going to do the rabbit thing.

Thanks
Jonny

Kennedy Engineering is probably the oldest and most trusted name in their field. I have no reservation in using any product from them. Have never heard bad but have heard that they do replace their products when there is any doubt if failure occurs. Good luck. Bob Ingman

at the bottom of this page shows how to modify the swingaxle springplates to use on IRS trailing arms. Pretty simple and a good way to get rid of the torsion tubes.

As Mark pointed out it can be done easily. I use a sheet metal template made off an irs plate, lay it over the longer one and lay out the holes and cut off. You must use the shorter bars with the short stubs. This will limit any hopes of long travel as the shorter bars will take less twist than the longer ones but it works well on a stock torsion. You can also upgrade to the short SAW torsion bars to get more twist back if you want to clearance the stops for more travel.

I have been told I can't run 2x3's with my short bars but have been doing so for a couple years without a problem. Maybe I am just lucky.

The short bars with the 2x3 arms are not the problem. The longer arms increase travel by way of longer lever from the pivot. You can get more travel from the same degree of twist you were using before. It does increase the leverage on the bar for sure but it does work. The problem comes from removing the stops upper and lower to increase the travel and increasing the degree of twist put on the torsion bars. Ive made it work before by not preloading the bars so much and using the coil over shocks to set the height but its a comprimise. a guy should really go with the right bars or the proper coil overs to eliminate the bars. In a perfect world that is, I also realize that most of us operate in the real world where comprimise is a fact of life.
