Strange Oil Leak on my 1.7...

Post by Racer Chris »

That bolt is very important to get right. It does hold the oil pickup in place. One thing people do to screw it up is over-tighten the nut under the engine that holds the oil screen cover in place. If you do that the bolt will bend it is then difficult to remove and is likely to leak oil. Sealing that bolt can be tricky in the car as that's a tough place to clean.

Strange Oil Leak on my 1.7...

Post by Switchblade »

Has anyone ever seen an oil leak from the single bolt that lives above the oil resevoir(back in a recessed hole, passengers side)??? It isn't a through bolt(nothing on the other side of the case).

This bolt can't be seen(without mirrors) with the heat exchanger in place, and it is even difficult with it removed.

Oil will just pour out around this bolt(which is stripped). There in is the second question, what does this bolt do? Does it hold something internal in place? Is it just a case bolt? I don't want to remove it and have something go CLUNK! in the case...

any help would be greatly appreciated. Also I can send digital pictures if that would help...

i looked in the dec vwtrends. in the t4 build up artilce pict#30. i think it's the bolt that retains the oil pick up tube internally.

I guess you've seen Jake's response on the T4rum already. I think the factory torque spec on the oil screen nut is inch pounds, not foot pounds.
