911 engine into a Super Beetle

Hi all, I've read bits and pieces of ghost 911s into a Super Beetle, is there anyone that can put me on track with someone that has done it? I have two bug both in build up stage, the second one will take approx eighteen months the body work all done it will be the one I go for broke on. At this point I was going to us a 091 tranny, but a 901 or a 915 sounds better, and to boot if I can get my hands on infor (real sound) info on installing a 911 in my bug I will do it. So come gang some help as to who did it and how can I get in touch with. And thanks

I haven't fitted a 911 engine to a bug but I know what's involved and I've fitted a 911/01 (similar to a 901) gearbox to a bug chassis.
If you want to try and get it under the decklid, mount the gearbox a little further forward than stock. Even with that, you'll be lucky if you can get it under that decklid.
You'll need the engine (obviously!), engine loom, oil tank and pipes, a different exhaust system (it won't clear and gearbox forks and wouls stick out the back). I would try and buy a 3.0 SC motor. Get it with the gearbox (915) and you won't have any problems to worry about with clutches etc.
Oh and you'll need to rig up a serious rear engine support. The gearbox is not designed to be mounted under the bellhousing and mouting it hear will put a hell of a lot of stress on the front mount. I would cut off the gearbox forks and hang the lot as is done in a 911. You'd need to run a cage to provide the support but if you're gonna run 210hp from a 911, you'll need every bit of strength in the chassis.

Try looking at project 50/50, it has a shortened 911 pan under a stock split body. The engine is under the decklid so pushing the 911 'box forwards should be possible without too much angle on the driveshafts.

I will hold you to that drive in the Speedster when you have it up and running.
The 911 chassis is shorter than a Beetle chassis in stock form by some 5 inches.
What is the "project 50/50" you refer to? An article on doing this or something?
I'd love to see something like this as fufure plans for the Oval include running 911C4 running gear.

Errrr, not much help I'm afraid, but....

As far as I have seen, the only successful 911 powered beetle was the original Nordstadt Beetle(s).
They basically chopped the rear seats out, built a tubular steel frame into the rear of the car, then ran the beetle with a 2.7lt 911 engine connected to a Porsche 914 gearbox which means the engine was MID MOUNTED and lived where the back seats normally go. In the engine bay, there was actually just a luggage area!
A Porsche 914 gearbox is basically a 901 'box, but with the diff flipped and a different nosecone on it.

I did a web search and came up with that. Hope your german is good though. Note the air vents in the side to duct air to the fan.

I guess someone else has lobbed a 911 into a beetle but it's nearly 18" longer and then the fan is mounted right at the front. Then there's the weight too. Early porsches are quite entertaining to drive. God knows what a 911 engined beetle would handle like.

Clive, I haven't been back here for a while... sorry it's taken so long.

I'm fitting a Subaru Turbo motor to my Oval now and am going ahead with removing the gearbox forks and fitting a full roll-cage to replace the engine mounting.
The cage will run to all suspension points and the engine and gearbox will hang from it. This is the only way I can think of strengthening the chassis enough to take 270bhp plus.

I think the project 50/50 can be found in the June 2001 total vw magazine. It features a 1950 split window bug on a modified 1985 porsche frame. It had a tubular frame to support the floor section. The artical states that the frame was actually lengthened by 80 mm between the front suspension and the pedal assembly. The rear fenders had to be moved forward by 50mm which requeired the removal and adjustment of the rear apron which was also widened along with the fenders. Looking at the pictures it was hard to tell that anything had been done to the body at all.

Get hold of a copy of the current issue (Februay) of 911 & Porsche world. Theres a feature on a 67 bug with a 2.4 911E engine, 901 transmission, brakes and suspension. It also has a small piece and 2 pics of project 50/50.
