Subaru 3.3 6 cyl boxer (SVX)

Anyone have any info on this enging? I have seen a Vanagon Syncro with this setup.

230 hp boxer 6 cyl. Not sure what it would fit in. Might fit in my fastback or my vanagon.

One place to look for more info on that engine would be in the back of a Flying Magazine - one of the homebuilt mags like KitPlane. The EA80, EA82 have been used for quite a while on hombuilt plaines (not as long as VW's of course

), and it seems like the SVX engine is gaining ground. You'll find several companies in the back of the mag that specialize in selling Subaru engines. There's also a couple of places that have stand alone fuel injection and ignition systems for the SVX engine, but they're way rediculous in price for automotive use (I guess they're reasonable for aircraft use).

You finally found someone that made my ideal rig, Syncro-Westy with a SVX flat six in it. SWEET!

I used to read kit plane... DUH, just dreaming about building one..

I got my Syncro GL from a guy in Ok City... not a westy but nice...

Paid $3k for it, but it never had a/c...

They are sweet motor, a friend had one in a auto vanagon and it was a weapon. Do you Vanagons have 4 or 5 speeds. Ours have 5 speeds and the gearboxes are extremly weak.

Our Syncros in the USA are 4 speeds with a granny low gear. 5 speed but the L is a extreemly low, crawler type setups. Most Vanagons are 4speeds or automatics. I have heard the Diesel Vanagons have 5 speed but I haven't seen one my self. No one talks about the trannys being weak, but the do wear out or brake and are expensive to fix.

This looks like something for a Porsche 914 swap. It would have to be cheaper that a 914-6 conversion I would think.

I've been considering this swap for a twin cab Kombi. I just sold my V8 powered camper and miss it already. Hopefully in about 12 months I'll be able to start on a twin cab.

I'm looking for seating for 5 but more room in the back for radiator etc to try and keep the Kombi standard/mildly modified looking this time.

I'm hoping it's an easier proposition than the V8 was, basically grab a SVX front cut and stuff it all in the back of the twin cab except the gearbox.

Anyway, if it all pans out and I go ahead I'll keep you guys updated.

P.S I think I read the EJ33 puts out about 180hp... sound right??

even better. Might actually be too much I'm sick of spending lots on big transaxles. Maybe the EJ25 would be better (cheaper too).

What year Double cab, kombi are you going to use? I would love a double cab period. One with this engine would kick but. Syncro Double cab with 230 HP FUN!!! Are you going to put the radatior under the bed?

I'd go with a 75-79 if I could although any would do (69-79). I like the idea of a syncro but not so keen on the post 'loaf' shape. I'd try and pickup a 2.0lt or at least 1700 since I wouldn't want the 1600 transaxle, broke two with the V8 (before a beefed 2.0lt box) did wheelstand though.

I'd plan to put the radiator under the bed with scoops from the sides for cooling and a couple of thermo fans with shrouds. The advantage here is short hose runs and a more compact install. Cooling could be an issue though. I'd modify the bed for access from the top and probably put polished wood slates on it and loose the gates, hard to get decent ones anyway

The electrical side is the only bit that worries me but I guess with a full front cut including harness etc it may not be so bad.

Anyway, I looked around for a twin cab yesterday and have found a few. Does seem like there's some candidates out there. Just need to wait until my house is built (reason for the V8 sale in the first place).

Oh Yeah, I originally thought V6 but I want a motor that revs a bit higher than the 3.8 V6 normally used in Australia as it doesn't suit the ratios of a standard 2.0lt transaxle that well, Subaru seems the best option maybe the 2.5 (turbo??) more so than the 3.3, I'll guess I'll have to investigate this issue some more.

I think KEP has the dims in there catalog on that engine - I'll see if I can find my copy.
