911 engine into 1950 split bug

Hi guys, from what I've read it seems possible to fit a 911 engine and trans into a super beetle but would I be able to squeeze one into a split bug?
I understand that the trans has to be moved forwards but wouldn't that put strain on the cv joints?
If this is possible I'm definatly going to do it, I was going to build a hot type 4 but this may be cheaper and much more fun!

Personally I like to bastardize my cars and change them to my liking. I have a 65' that's going to recieve a 1.8l turbo Subaru engine and Bus tranny. But the thing is there is still tons of 65's out there. There are only a handful of 49-63s out there, so maybe you might restore the car instead of molesting its original form. It's just a thought but the early models a a bit sacred you know.

I'm not joking. The car I have is a bare shell with no heater channels. It could probably be restored properly but there are so many bits missing it would take years and cost far more than it would be worth. I don't even have the correct pan, its currently sitting on a nice 59 pan which I'm quite happy to chop about to get the engine in. In fact the body will stay as stock as possible and be restored to a high standard so if the correct pan came along it could be swapped onto it.

No, I don't think there's anything wrong with it at all, people should be able to do what they want to their cars without purists hassling them. There just have been some jokes of this type in the past.
I'm no expert, but I don't think you will find a 911 engine is cheap. I think the only way you can do it is by fabricating a sub frame of some sort. It would not be impossible though.

I think a 911 powered split would be too cool. You could bring it to shows to make some purists cry

I can just imagine people weeping when they see it!
A 911 engine would cost about the same as the upright fan conversion and alternator for a type 4 engine. Then there's the cost of the engine and a decent exhaust system & Carbs so even with a top end overhaul on the 911 engine I'm still only looking at about £4000 max for a 230bhp engine that sounds like no other.

Maybe you could mid mount the engine as well. And you can find 911 motor's relatively cheap, just do abit of searching, thats all!

I was looking at that the other day

I don't think I'm going to mid mount the engine as I'd have to use a 914 or Boxster gearbox and I'd rather use a G50 as thats the box that comes with the 1987ish 3.2 engine.

not a prob,
naa, don't go for a 914 or boxster trans.
Get one from a 968 6 speed, that would be your best set-up for mid engine since they put the diff at the back of the trans for better wieght distrubution.

I don't think I really want to midmount the engine as the car will be a bit of a sleeper and I want to keep the interior fairly stock & I've never really liked the empty engine bay look

I know I'm going to sacrifice handling but I've got a 924 for that

haha, yeah the enpty engine bay look is abit of a turn off. Using the 968 brakes would be another thing altogether
