Aloha everyone,

So what distributor should I use? I have an 009 in excellent condition, but I've been told to look into the Mallory units sold by John at aircooled.net and also the MSD billet ones with the 6AL box.

I think most of you know what engine I'm building, but here goes again just in case...

2110cc
9.0:1 CR
48 IDAs w/ Scat Traks match ported
1 5/8" merged header (not sure on muffler yet)
Welded German heads w/ 42 x 37.5 P&P
Scat C45 cam & Scat 1.25 rockers

I'm happy with a Bosch 010 and a Berg Ignitor ignition.

1904cc dual 45DLRA, Scat C-45, 42x37.5, 9.25:1, 1.75 merged.

Mine's a street car, it depends if you'll be doing alot of racing.

With the Mallory, you can run any 'stock style' plug wires, be it Bosch, Jacobs, or any other brand you want. MSD, you can only run MSD wires. The Mallory will work with, and without a CDI, the MSD will not. You can get vacuum advance with your Mallory if you want, but not avaliable on the MSD.

I'm currently using a Mallory distributor with the optical pickup, and while checking the timing with a timing light, the timing stays perfectly steady all the way up to 7500rpm (havent taken it higher), unlike my old 009 which gets 'shakey' over 3500rpm.

You can use MSD ends with stock plug wires per MSD instructions. I haven't tried it myself so I wouldn't know how it works.

Aloha,

Thanks for the feedback. I'll be driving this engine on the street mostly. It will make a few trips to the dragstrip every month though.

I guess I will look into the Mallory unit Aircooled.net is selling.

If you have the $$$, the mallory is THE way to go. I've got the unilite optical w/vac. on mine. They are 'ROCK' solid, and the best part is that you can tune practally EVERY aspect of it (if you buy the tuning kit). Aloha Eric,

You said you're running this setup with 44 IDFs...how did you get the vaccum line hooked up? I'm new at this stuff. I have a set of 48 IDAs on Scat Trak manifolds, FYI.

I really need to make sure my engine runs smoothly and lasts. Yes, I can hear the hordes telling me IDAs are not streetable...oh well.

My 44s came with a vacuum port. If you got yours from aircooled.net, you have them. If not, then take a look and you may or may not (brass spigot right above the mixture adjustment screw). If not, then you need to drill out the spot that was intended for them. Don't ask me how, tho.

I ran it using my 48IDF's.
I think the 40mm vent was too large, and my cam had too much duration to make much use of the vacuum advance.
Until I get my new motor running, i'm using it on my bone stock 1600dp, and loving it.

Hmmmm. I have my Jacobs Pro-Street Pak, and my Jacobs Ultra-coil waiting to be installed on my bug. Maybe I should pop it all on my bus to get it 'broke in'.

Aloha,

My IDAs don't have any vaccum ports. I was just wondering what distributor I should use with them. I'm really interested in this new Mallory unit from Aircooled.net .

People seem to be having nightmares with the MSD units and there's flat spots all over the 009. I'm lost.

A 009 is not a high performance distributor. It is a very simple and poorly made mechanical device that has no tunability included in the design. While you can play with spring tension and counterweights you really should put a true performance distributor on a performance engine.

My experience with other types of engines has shown that MSD makes a great ignition system for drag racing and other full-performance situations. That's why you see them on so many dragsters. If you need to drive on the street the Mallory would probably be a better choice.

The MSD distributer is an excellent piece. It is very adjustable and durable.. If people are having problems, they probabaly have the advance set up wrong.

MSD=race
Mallory=street

Cant say I agree with this one. The reason so many 'drag racers' run MSD is because MSD spends so much $$$ in advertising. Both MSD and Mallory are fully adjustable in both how much advance you want, and what curve you want. And both hold thier timing steady at high rpms.

If you're running IDA's, instead of IDF's, I would not bother with the vacuum advance on it, just get the regular one with the adjustable centrifugal advance.

I totally agree with Marty on the MSD Distributor.It is solid and very adjustable.A great piece.You have to be able to trust your timing is accurate.
