044 Ultra Magnum Plus

Anyone seen the new CB Perf. 044 Uitra Magnum Plus heads in the Jan 2002 issue of HotVW? Are those massive ports as-cast rather than hand ported/polished? I'm not the most knowledgable when talking flowrate, but how does 232.26cfm at .600" lift compare to some all-out ported heads from some of the top head porters.
If these heads are as-cast and CB prices them(under $700) like their other 044s then we could be looking at one of the best values in competition heads on the market.

Guess i got to go get that issue.
Im no head guru by any means either.
But i would venture to say 232 cfm is pretty big number for a head like that. It doesnt come cast that way. I least i dont think so. If it does, your right, best deal on the market. did it say the measurement was taken at 25" of vacuum or any thing like that? or was it at a lower number and then factored or maybe at 28".
If you were looking for an idea of what another head might flow, take my Super flo 2 heads. the intake was lightly massaged and cleaned up but basic shape and size was kept.
they flowed 210 cfm @ .600 lift using 25" of vacuum. I think a regular lightly massaged SF would flow in the 240-250ish area. (an intelegent guess, but i remember somthing like that)

232 CFMis alot of air to move through any head. Makes you wonder what their test pressure was? Most head flow charts measure @ 25 inches and .500 lift instead of .600.

I would still be afraid of the seats, I've had more than one fall out of their old heads,hopefully they have changed seat material or fit...I will still stick with stock castings for my engines, we know what they do.

CB makes some decent stuff, but has also had a lot of problems over the years with heads (as Jake mentioned, seats and guides).

I also find those flow #s VERY hard to swallow, the article stated it was @ 25". My new heads had a LOT of work on them (SHO-3s) and it was all Fred could do to get 204cfm out of them, but that was at .500" lift.

VW articles have to be taken with a grain of salt, they are often closer to Infomercials if you aren't careful. The data is usually supplied by the parts maker. Does Hot VWs/Trends have a flowbench to verify the data? Hardly. They have to trust the vendor, and it's a situation that can be taken advantage of for a little "fudging".

The magazines make magazines, not debunk parts claims.

BTW, the price on the heads is in the $1000-1100 range per pair, FYI.

I don't think they're hard to swallow... I can flow like that at 25" of mercury, too

that's what i noticed "at 25 vaccume" what? water? mercery? cow piss?... I'm still confused, is this a basic 044 that has been ported? or is it cast like this?

The head inquestion (accordiong to the article) is _not as cast_ but rather has been cleaned up in house at CB Perf.

I would like to take that head, and run it on a flow bench myself. I have used Fred Simpson's Super-Flo 600 flow bench a number of times now, and I can tell you as well that 232 cfm is outstanding, to the point that I have a hard time believing it. I am NOT saying they didn't accomplish it, but I am a tiny bit skeptical. I would like to get that particular head, or one identical to it, and test it myself. believe me, if it's as good as they say it is, I'll be one of the first ones making the call to Farmersville....
