THREE LITRE STREET MOTORS!!

I'm glad to see these new cases
finally take shape. I really want a big stump puller to blaze the asfault with.
After seeing Mark Reilly drive his 3 litre tube frame ex- prostock Super Beetle on the Berg Rally and down the freeway to the Classic this year I was amazed. I watched him assemble one of these monsters and it struck us both funny that here he is assembling an 88x103,aluminum case, siamese aluminum cyl.,angle flow 50x40 headed motor for the street and this same motor was availible for years starting way back in 82 or so. Bug pack sold all the parts for years and many sand rails and Miget racecars used them. It was just amazing to us that know one had ever built one for the street. Here they are no longer made and everyone is talking about how it may be possible to build a really big motor for the street . Dean Lowery designed it by expanding the dimentions of a stock case to the max. I guess he was way ahead of his time.
The case even looks like a stock VW case. The only thing that doesn't fit is the cooler. But thats because there is physicly no room between the cylinder bores. I don't think it can be done on any case unless the oil passages are completely redesigned. Anyway it just struck us funny that the technology was there for years and no one used it. I guess now is finally the right time.
PS. I know some people talk up Type 4
motors But I have some questions. I've heard forged cranks are no longer availible for them. Also does anyone offer a flanged crank like the type one motors. I've seen a few pinned and wedgemated Type 4s blow the flywheels off and it worries me because I was thinking of using a really big type 4 to turbo charge. But the ones that lost the flywheels were only asperated. Only about 250HP. I would like to make way more.

Dont worry about stock crank or flywheel mount they handle 300+ BHP with ease.Just use a big sprung centre clutch to absorb the shock of a launch and dont be tempted to put loads of dowels in ,It just makes the crank and flywheel weaker.
My friend has just swapped a 90 stroke T4 crank for a NOS T4 case .

Mark, err gasburnr, you're not thinking far enuf outside the box. The T1 based cases still have the limiting T1 bore centers. and the T4 needs a dropped cam and the new heads on the horizon.................hmmmmmm

I see what you're saying Tom. Why ar people waisting time building aftermarket expanded type 1s when they should be building aftermarket drop cam and even larger headstud pattern type 4s!!
I've done some measuring on a type 4. Boy did they screw this motor up! If it weren't for the dumb "wide lobe" cam setup you could cram a 94mm crank in the things!! The cam is already dropped(but more would be better:-)and theres lots of room everywhere else except for maybe the roof of the case. A type 4 would be a great case to copy and make a few small changes to. Whats a 94 x 120?? thats gota be big and I think its entirely possible with a type 4 using a normal cam set up and widened cyl. stud spacing. The wheels are spinning!!!!!

I know fairly little about the T-4, but don't they have some head/cylinder sealing problems when you bore 'em really big? If so, is it a result of thin cylinder walls or to much distance from headstud to headstud? And, lastly, is there a reason you couldn't machine a cam for narrower lobes and use a T-1 style lifter or even go roller lifter? After all, if you're gonna be a bear...be a grizzley!

Yep, T IV power is the way of the future on the street, for everyday, powerful driving..

Don't let that big case fool ya, it is a bitch to build a stroker T IV, trust me..Grab a grinder, lathe, mill and a hacksaw and start some work,.

yeah, I've seen willie coyote pull out of DQ with that 3 liter and it sounded well behaved. He's up for diriving it too, the whole Berg rally. If that Pro stock tube chassis chop top had a 36hp engine I'd still be concerned with a big hassle from some cop with a hard on for impounding hot street cars. Then again my introduction to Mark Rieley was when he ripped around the corner at VW paradise in his late 60's Chevy wagon and smoked the tires, with Herbert's poop box with tow bar hanging on the wagon's rear bumper! I just want a low 11 second streetable turbo VW.

Everybody say it with me: 4252cc

Even a more modest (and realistic) 94x103 set nets you 3132cc.
