Do you like to go fast? Well get out of that stocker and build a hipo motor for your VW. Come here to talk with others who like to drive fast.

Has anybody had any experiences running an aftermarket case on the street? I maybe looking into a Scat Killer or Autocraft case for my bug, cooling would be 911 fan. Before you all say I'm mad or a waste of money it's just an idea. Cheers from the UK.

A friend makes a new aftermarket case. Ken Majors built a 2234cc motor based on my friends case and said it was like assembling a stocker (no clearancing or special fitting required). They were not building anything special they wanted to build a bolt together motor like anyone could build a stock 1600. I don't know what cam they chose but they weren't looking for big HP, just a large displacment easy assembly motor. It made 165 hp on the dyno with no special tuning. If you want more info call 619-596-0886

Consider the wasser case as a possible option.

Thanks guys, I am probably going to go for the Scat case with the possibility of using a roller cam set-up, any bad news out there for roller lifter/cam. Apparently it has been done but just costs $$$$. But maybe this will be cheaper than a flat cam with all the stress and broken parts that goes with that senario.
p.s Steve, Marco has been trying to convert me to the wasser way of thinking!

OK guys.

Why would you NOT want to switch over to a wasser case? I know the arguments FOR getting one, but I want to hear the naysayers tell me why wasser cases suck.

Beuller? Beuller?

Searoy, tell me about using a wasser case. Is there something in the Forum already to save you some time. I'm assembling a 78X94, and would rather use a stronger case. It makes sense that it would be stronger, i thought the cranks were completely different. Thanks for your assistance.

Is the cam dropped .100 in a wasser? If not really long strokers that will fit aftermarket cases won't fit it.

Look for the VW Speed and Drag Racing thread named "Wasser crank in Type !." The last post (at the time of this writing) is mine, and tells just about all I know about the wasser case, and where I got my information.

I'm no aftermarket case wizard. Do ALL aftermarket cases have dropped cams, or is it just possible to machine them so that they are? The wasser case can be machined so that the cam is .100" lower. I want to say Fred said it would go .150" but I will not quote him since I do not remember exactly. Perhaps it was when he was talking about the Perf Tech case that would go .150". Or maybe I'd had too much 151... ;p

Searoy, thanks for the assist. Found the section you are talking about, heading to the local boneyard to get the 2 that I know are there.

What about the water jackets? I know there is a car over here that has had them removed and put "normal" air cooled cyls in place but i imagine that its not too easy?
Any comments?

I don't know the procedure, but I figure it's actualy pretty simple. Band saw cut off the jacket/cylinder combo, and bore for cylinder holes. What else is there? Recylce the aluminum and buy a few beers.
