PILLOW!!! why will 1835 die fast in bus?
hey man, i just scored an 1835 from a well respected engine builder in eugene, and have the option to throw it in the bus. i am running a 3:88 ping/pinion.
in another link you had mentioned that one could only expect 20,00-40,000 miles out an 1835. why?
and why is the bus/bug comparison make so much difference?
break it down.
peace evan

PILLOW!!! why will 1835 die fast in bus?
so i have been resding about the 1835 in about every forum link ...and i think i have found out why. too thin of walls. poop.
should i just up it to 94s you think? i like to kick it on the open road, and in the mountain roads as well. hate to have a weak point in the system. the 1835 was from a sandrail that his friend had for 3 mon after construction. don't think it got too much attention. that guy worked long hours.
if i had a 4pass cooler along w/ doghousa and x-sump i could keep the heat down??
maybe i should just change to 94s
peace let me know ev

Here is what I would do
Run the hell out of the 1835 and then after it starts getting excessive blow-by then swap to 90.5s.
94s require the motor to be torn down and then cut for bigger jugs, not worth it.
Take Care,

i scored this for real cheep and my 1600 dp 110 cam fullflow case is smooth as ice. i don't have a large bankroll...and in the end i want to find a way to run biodiesel in the bus.
the 1835 was such a steel and is solid as can be. chromoly pushrods, nice ratiorockers, not eh crap ones, bolt on valve covers, 8 doweled unlioghtened flywheel...all balanced...
just don't want to make any stupid moves. yunno. biodiesel is is in three years. tops
peace pillow.

Who built the engine? Up to now the heaterboxes have been disconnected(cables) in my '68, and with the crazy cold weather Eugene has been having lately it has been a real bear to drive my bus in the mornings. I'd imagine it'd be a real pain to go with J-tubes and no heat for the rest of the winter... I guess I agree with Pillow, run the 92's until they warp and then swap to 90.5's. What the heck. I've been running 87's ("oh no!") since '97. What are the other specs on the 1835? Cam, C/R, heads, etc. That'll help determine things too.
Sorry I haven't gotten in touch, I haven't had any real time at nights lately to do anything but sleep. Is your bus a 21 window w/Empi 5's? I think I saw one like that the other night a few blocks from my apt. when I was out driving around.

ron, i just don't think you know about trying to heat a ragtop splitty... in any weather witht he heater boxes. when they get hot after half an hour...it is just to keep one's hands warm really. i am looking in to a cool compact rv propane heater that i can mount and run tubes from. however at the moment i havent got one...and screw the heater boxes. they suck--really and i would love to hear someone who swears by them. i'd bake 'em a cake.

What shape are your boxes in? What about the channels the warm air goes through? I have no doubts about the troubles you'd have with your split - my bus is drafty enough, I have a ragtop too. But I gotta admit, while I don't swear by them my heater boxes work pretty darned well. I got new Danish (?) ones a couple of years ago and they're certainly better than my breath fogging up the windshield - I know all about that, believe me.
Run j-tubes if you've got big valves. Otherwise, I'd try to keep the boxes so at least you have the option of kinda keeping mildly somewhat warm

I'll agree with Adrian & Ron, may as well run the 92s into the ground. 90.5s will fit the same size holes in the case & heads as 92s, but expect that you'll need to have the heads "kissed" to remove the ditch that the thin jugs will cut into them before you can use the 90.5s. At the first hint that there's any kind of compression leak between the head & cylinder take it off the road if you hope to salvage the head.

Well respected engine builders normally won't touch an 1835....Last one I built was in 1992.

I have been running my 58 microbus with an 1835 engine for about 8 months now, previously was in a 58 samba. Never had any problems, if its built well it should run for a long time.
It might run a little hotter than your 1776's, but who cares.

thanks for the suppor Deano
i am going to swap the engines tomorrow. i am getting some longer braided hose so i can run an extra cooler. i really don't want this thing to run hot at all.
I WILL KEEP YOU ALL UPDATED ON THE OUTCOME.

What cooler are you planning on running?
I have a sweet Volvo cooler that in my opinion is perfect for a bus. Fits under the driver battery tray. If interested drop me an e-mail. Needs a t-stat but so does any other oil cooler.
