TIV Thermostat

Does anyone have a source for a working used thermostat for 2.0L TIV? Mine is shot and I went to get the one off my parts bus but it was gone. There aren't really any junkyards around where I'm at with any buses. I called Busted Bus and they said they can get them new but at $45! I would prefer if someone has a couple laying around that are working to sell one to me. If anyone has a source or one they can spare please let me know. Thanks!

you have to break down and get a new one. a used t-stat is throwing good money after bad. and unfortunately 45 bucks is what they cost. i got one on ebay last year for 8 bucks but that was a fluke.

now, if you go to aircooled.net and look at the t-1 thermostat page you will see some instructions on how to make a t-1 stat work in the t-4. it is a very easy mod and you save about 20 bucks. there is very little difference between a t-1 thermostat and one for a t-4.

So does the TI thermo fit the TIV bracket or is that what the modification is for? How exaclty is it modified to work? I couldn't seem to find the right info. Does the TI thermo have the same amt of expansion and contraction, I mean, it doesn't limit the movement of the flaps at all does it? Thanks for the help!

Guys, don't forget that the ACVW thermostat is designed to "fail open". This means that if the t-stat breaks for any reson, it will open the flaps fully and allow cooling air to keep you from melt down, i know this is only a little good news, but at least you don't have to worry about burning up, only overcooling.

I am going to order a new one Monday. I just can't decide if I should save the 20 bucks and buy a TI or just by the TIV which would probably be less work. Guess I'll sleep on it.

Get the Type1, it is easy to make work. According to AirCooled Net, the Type 4 is no longer available anyway. All you are doing is swapping out the captive cable nut on your Type 4 t-stat, and making your cable a new captive to your Type 1 t-stat by disassembling the new t-stat's nut and slipping your cable into it.

the t4 thermostats are available. pelican parts have them, others too. not to say the type 1 won't work. i have done the type 1 mod and it works fine. but if you want the original part you can get it.

if the cooling flaps are always open, the oil will not warm up properly. engine damage will result. don't run the motor with a bad t-stat or no t-stat. it is a needed part.
