turbo 1600 cheap

Post by jeff-roy »

i want to add a turbo to my 1600 for not much money, i have a 009 and a single dellorto 40 drla carb. would like to go with a blowthrough if possible, do i have to buy the expensive msd ignitions to retard my timing while on boost? i am looking to bump it a little but not za whole lot. probably about 7-9 lbs of boost. i am going to fabriccate my header to accept the turbo when i get one , what kind of turbo should i be looking for , do i need a internal waste gate ot do i use a BOV. sorry about the long inquiry, i am new to vw bugs, i have a 72 bug but want to make it go a little faster with more torque and get up and go . any suggestions would be much appreciated. thanks

Welcome to the shop talk jeff-roy

I would look for a t25 turbo. You can lock you 009 dizzy and not buy another thing for ignition. I would stay with the internal Waste gate. NO you don't need a BOV. It is nice but not needed on low boost.
We have a section up top about turboing , Please have a good read and ask any questions you want. There are a few here who turboed 1600's There are many options here to. Welcome again.

Hi Jeff, do a lot of reading here -especially the stickeys - and get the Turbomania book from CB performance. You can do a blow thru very cheaply. I did.
I am using a turbo off a Ford probe (it's a little big but works), a pressurized stock fuel pump (sealed the push-rod with an O ring and put a pressure fitting in the pump base). And blowing into a modified stock carb.
Turbomania talks about sealing the Delorto carb too.

What to replace for turbo use?

Post by Erikie »

Hi i'm also new here,

I want to build a 1641CC turbo engine from scrap.
What parts can i use best to make sure it will be a reliable engine?
Or can i use the ''ordinary' parts?

What double centre placed carb is recommended?
a Weber IDF or a DNCF, or maybe a dellorto?
40 , 44 etc?
I want to build a blow through turbo, it is a GT17, used on Saab 9-3 series.

Thnx,

Erik

I put a kkk k03 on my 1600 34pict3 blow through and it seems to be the perfect size. no lag and power up to 5,500rpm. It has a wastegate set at 8 psi. A saab t3 should be a little big for a 1600, would be better suited to a 1776-1915cc.

I have the same Saab turbo on my 1915, it can be a little laggy if you don't beat on it to 'preheat' the exhaust.

Its a cheapie job for sure. The ignition quit the other day and I am having a pain in the butt figuring it out. The filter is a uni for a motorcycle, I got it off of ebay. I got the idea from mike thompson, who has made a great contribution by posting the info on how to do this. just search for 34pict3 blowthrough and it will come up, I think it is a sticky. I ported the exhaust ports, put heavy single springs in the heads, chromoly pushrods and solid rocker shafts in it, modified the fuel pump for boost as well and tapped the oil pressure sending unit for a feed and put the return line into the cylinder head. I had to make my own flange because this k03 is one of the twins from a 2.7t and it has a weird exhaust flange. The 1.8t flanges are easy to find so hopefully you have one of those.

there is a tap on the boost side of the compressor. a line runs from there to the wastegate. I redrilled and tapped the turbo tap for 1/8"npt as the metric fittings are impossible or very expensive to find. The line you see running to the engine is a boost line to pressurize the underside of the diaphram on the stock fuel pump that runs off a tee fitting from the wastegate line. The fitting installed with the allen nut in between the wastegate and the tee is for adjusting boost level. If you need some pics on what the modified fuel pump looks like, I'll post some. I had to buy the turbomania book just to figure that out. Maybe I'll just take a picture of the page.

my copy of turbomania is somewhere undergoing postal indignity I'm sure

a pic of your compressor side showing that outlet would be keen tho

I could swear all the threaded openings on mine are blind...time to go
check it over some more

uhh, I feel drunk after looking at that, sorry about the blur. Use the same style pump as you see here, the stock screw together rebuildable type, as they usually have the internal seal you need already bult in there and the diaphram is in the right location (fuel intake on the bottom tube) and it's easier to tap than the sheetmetal pumps. Oh yea, and JB weld the hole up on the back side of the pump under the diaphram.

Here's the compressor pic, try not to use plastic t's, I went through a 3 pack of them getting it to work. You could always drill a hole in the same spot on the compressor outlet and tap it yourself, but there should be a blank raised spot to drill. Some guy wanted $50 for that little boost fitting used and you can guess what I told him to do with it. I taped it and got one for $1.00 at auto zone.

That little nubbin is it. Mine was that same size before I drilled it out and tapped it, it was a tiny hole. these turbos aren't good for over 12psi, so that little hole should be fine. I tried forever to find a fitting that would keep me from tapping it, but my patience ran out. I see you have 4 bolts on your exhaust intake, what car did it come out of? I hope you have an easier time with the flanges and gaskets than I did. I also had to rotate the housing to get the oil drain in the right position.
