New arrival
I told you guys Id start this post if she came thru on my $150 offer.
Well
The previous owner finally came around to my $150 offer.....2 days after I bought another car.
Image
Well as Promised
Lets see how bad she really is
Looks like a typical 37 year old that has been sitting since 2005.
Image
OH And the Previous owner said it had a slight engine fire.
Image
Here's the money shot
Image
Stay tuned as the big question gets answered.

Learned something new already (this car has some type of clip) on the right rear fender bolts they look like an emisions thing?
Almost looks a little better already
Image
It's an early 71 with the vin 1112109421
Not seeing a whole lot of rust (rubber mat under the battery) and I still need to vacuume and maybe rip out the carpet.
A few more progress picts before and after a little clean up.
Image
Rear seat got a little toasty.
Image
Going to need to change out the visors
found about $3.00 in change so far 8)
Image
Headliner needs to go also.
Image
I still need to vacuume and dump the 2 cans of trash ^^ check out the bio-sticker
Image
The previous owner said it had an alternator fire........
My CSI finding say carb fire :D

Now I remember why I just cut the back off of these things

Removal of all the OG tin, nuts and bolts, heater cables....Most of which I didn't remember were there as I usually deal with Baja's and sandrails.
Also doesn't help that all the orignal parts are still in place.
Image
Well it's out and YES I thought about just cutting the rear out of the car (I thought better) Maybe someone would still like an uncut super.
Image
So much for the previous owners attempt to keep the motor covered from rain over the last 3 years. I did blow a little rust out of #2 intake port (that cant be good?)
Image
the other side looks good (no water issues)
After chipping off all the molten aluminum it still looks like a solid motor (nothing on the case itself is melted)
Image
What do you think now? (Good deal)
I know a good deal of work
102 at 1:00 in the Yuma AZ shade

The previous owner listed the car for $500 obo.
I drove by the car and thought YA Right :o (slight engine fire)
I called back and offered $100 becuase she had a clean AZ title.....No sale....She relisted it for $300 obo, I called and actually when to look at it this time (looks bad) I offered $150 becuase I was looking for something for the kid to drive on the cheap and I have a chit load of parts :D a month goes by and I then found a 97 Neon for $400 and 2 days later she calls and will take my $150 offer  I thought (I dont need it now) but I told her I'd take it for $150 and picked it up (I am courious to see how bad off the motor really is)
Fixing to find out after the sandrail motor comes off the run stand.
Image
What's a trash can full of OG doghouse engine tin worth these days?
I'm not throwing them out, The can makes for a good holder for now.
I have parts to either Baja the rear or put it back as a sedan.

Looks like a slight engine fire, alternator, really wonder who told her that was the problem. Looks like another one was saved from the scrapper, good job and thanks for posting it over here. 102° at 1300, but it's a dry heat

I wouldn't waste Baja parts on a Super. It must have been a site to see. Flames all the way to the sun visors! I'm mounting a fire extinguisher tomorrow... Good luck with your project.

Update the good :) the bad :( and the ugly :o
The sandrail motor runs great as a fresh 1776cc should :D

The burn motor made it to the run stand.
Image
doesn't look so bad now does it :?: Wait it gets worse :(

Did I mention one of the reasons for buying this car AS41Image
I pulled the oil drain plug and got a little water :o
under valve cover 3/4 a little moisture  and some missing rocker shims :?:
Image
3/4 Head doesn't look to bad Might clean up?
Image
3/4 cylinders still have the cross hatch hone marks ( previous owners >>> it's got a rebuilt motor)
Dished pistons
Image
Fuel pump rod stuck in the broken off pump spacer (this is not going to be fun)
Image
Little more moisture in the 1/2 side cover
Image
Copper head shims but this side looks like a grow your own crystals project
Image
Cylinders look like crap also.
Image
So much for (previous owner) We had the motor covered :!:

Motor is still froze up (wonder why?)

Good news The cylinders are off now and the bottom end turns like a fresh motor (time to shop for a 1641cc P&S set) and clean up the case.

Stripped more engine parts off tonight and the bottom end looks good.

Tear down is complete and now the parts cleaning begins.

Bent the heck out of the front pulley getting it off with the suggested VW puller I keep forgetting that they don't work for me :o
Probably just put an aluminum pulley on anyhow.

Dug around in the yard today and came up with a deck lid and rear fenders
Image
I also found a rear window (with or without defrost) I have 5 :D
I opted to go with the non defrost (hello Yuma Arizona it's hot) when would I use it
I have to window tint it and find a rear window gasket.

Image

All the vinyl and headliner are gone.
Image

Great documentation, you'll be so glad to have these later. I don't ever know what to take pictures of, so I never get pictures of what I would have wanted!

You realize taking rust off that way is going to take...well...a while...?

Well I dont think this car is going to be a keeper? We'll see.

The air tool beats the heck out of the hand held wire brush when the sand blaster is loaned out.

I dont think this one in on CarFax  So maybe I can just say new paint and fresh motor :?:

Karma is kicking in :D
I stripped pistons and heads today for cleaning.
The worst head looks like it will still clean up
Image
The better head is a cake walk
Image
Valve guides are not sloppy and the spark plug holes look great.
Valve seats look like they will clean up nicely with a lapping of the valve.

The pistons are de-ringed and ready for cleaning (I checked the ring gap in the cylinders and they are right at spec)
Cylinders even cleaned up
One has a slight and I mean slight issue that should go away with a very light scratch hone 8) If I even bother :!: (I'll look at it again in the daytime when I'm not as tired......I was going to replace the cylinder in question with another I had in my parts stash But the other cylinder is for a 85.45 piston and not a 85.95
Even the white silicone push rod tube seals are still plyable
I know at this point your asking yourself (how cheap is this guy really)
Well the cheapest running/driving bug I have bought was $350 and for that I had to swap flywheels and re-install the motor.
I could possibly be driving this one for $150 and some gathered parts 8)

So what works better to get the rust off the quickest? Sandblasting or the wire air brush?

Also...standard primer/paint on the body or rustbullet/paint?

I would think sandblasting would make an aweful mess...buy I haven't actually done that yet...

thanks

My sand blaster is curently loaned out  so my choice was the die grinder with the wire wheel....It actually works fast....Sand blasting is faster and probably easier....didn't know you had to clean up after sand blasting just sweep it out into the street :D JK
