Parking brake arm clip

Post by InaneCathode »

My parking brake borked up today, i took the rear left drum off (thats the cable that was loose in the handle inside the car) to find that the parking brake arm dealy was missing the pin that holds it to the rear brake shoe. Sure enough after shaking the assembly a bit out pops the pin and a hot looking washer (had some scuffs on it and it was blued with heat). I then shook it a more and out drops what remains of what i think is the clip that holds the pin in. I think someone was grinding on it to get it off or something because its blued, it has scuffing marks on it, and theres nothing rotating near there than can touch the clip.
My question is this. I just recently went to Harbor Freight to get a big box of E clips (choke mechanism for a ttt500 incidentally) and i was wondering if i can just use a generic chinese E clip instead of what was there, or if i should go to the local VW shop and get that specific clip. The pin isnt under linear stress, that is to say that the E clip just holds the pin from bouncing out backwards it isnt under stress.

Thanks

An E-clip should work, provided it fits well (you may have room to stuff two of `em on).
The washer was a "wavy washer" that came from under the head of the pin - it just stabilizes the assembly and reduces slack. P/N N 01 223 83

If you need a new pin it's 211 609 601B and common to almost all models of ACVW, as is the clip (211 609 619)

I have found those clips in service on other peoples ACVWs, the idea seems to be ok. Harbor Freight clips too me seem a little brittle, I would be nervous if they had to move much.

The stock horse shoe is kind of a PINTA to squeeze and un-squeeze but it seems to be the best clamp to use there.
Yeah some may call it overkill, but you can't have too much overkill.

The harbor freight e clips are more bendy than i'd like my e clips to be. They're springy to a point but they sure to bend easy.
I'll throw one or two on and see how it holds :)

i buy the horseshoe type clips in the "help" section of the local Advance autoparts chain... the pack has probably a dozen or so clips and is only a couple bucks...been using those type (from same place) for 20 years..
