hand brake
hey any reason my emergency brake cable would randomly come loose and send the button and spring and hook all shooting out of the handle when I try to engage it? thanks. can't find the end of the cable either.

Usually this happens when your emergency brake cables need adjusting. If the cables are too loose, you can pull the handle up far enough that the ratchet pawl goes past the last tooth, spins around 180 degrees and allows the spring loaded rod to fly out of the handle once you release the button.
To fix this you need to loosen the brake cables, lift the handle way up, slide the rod back in while you flip the ratchet pawl over 180 degrees with a small screwdriver as you push the button just enough until the round part on the back of the ratchet pawl fits into the hook at the end of the rod.
There is a cut away view of the emergency brake handle in most of the Bentley VW manuals. It makes more sense when you actually look at the parts.
The other possibility is if the emergency brake handle is severely bent up.
