My blinkers don't work...

Yeah my blinkers don't work here are the symptoms.

when i turn the lever to left or right both blinker lights come on and stay on (on the dash not on the car)

Also when i hit the lever for the blinkers the gas gauge hits empty.

i pulled the fuse box out to check the relays, and there are only 3 of them. from left to right there are two black ones a missing one and then the relay for the lights.

i was told by another vw mechanic the furtherst one to the right was the "flasher" but i tried replacing it and nothing happened.

Any ideas??? maybe its the third one, the missing one. but on the wiring diagram it only goes to the fuses for the headlights....

Fuse #2 is open or is making poor contact in the holder.
Replace it even if it "looks" OK, and polish the holder contacts.

replaced both fuses for the blinkers and cleaned the contacts.....



still no blinkers.

my ground issue did go away but still no blinkers.

That's the big clue.

The Fuel Gauge gets power from same fuse as the Turn Signal flasher function.

Use a tester to trace down why (likely a high resistance) the signals
drag down to the voltage to the fuel gauge as well as the flashr.

Ah.

You may be down to a bad flasher relay, or open connection to it.
With the lever to L or R and Ignition On, check for 12V at Term #49 (+)
on the flasher.
Then check that Term #31 is properly grounded. Best way is to connect
a jumper wire from chassis to #31.

After that, replace the flasher.

Which one is the flasher relay?? because i tried replacing the furthest right one, and it didn't help. i guess it wouldn't hurt to replace all of them. also the third on from the left is missing. 56b which looks like a secondary headlight relay. i tried replacing 56a

on the diagram it goes from left to right.

On the diagram, it is J2. The flasher has terminals: 31, "+", 49a.

jim thank you so much, ill check it out tomorrow. hopefully ill have some functional blinkers!!!!!
