While driving the bug alternator produces a nice charging voltage of 13.5 volts THEN the voltage plunge to 11.6 volt for no reasons (with absolutely no other running accessories) AND pushing the RPM up-to 2,000 make a slight 11.8 volt improvement and it remain in this non-charging state until I stop and restart the car after a few minutes wait.
This intermittence non-charging state can happen at any time, every now and then during my daily drive (day or night).
Any suggestions on where I should start the trouble shooting?
Voltage drop from 13.5 to 11.8v while driving

A similar thing happened to me; My alt seems to only be putting out about 12.5-12.7V at 1500 RPM. This seems a tad too low for my liking as the battery usually gets ~.2V less due to internal resistances.. I have a 2 year old EMPI 75W alt with the internal regulator.
Obviously I do not want to have to replace this. The B+ connection seems a bit loos at times, not the connection to the wire, but the threading's anchor to the alt itself. you think the connection is failing internally? If so is there some way to check to see if it's this connection? Or at least a way to replace the regulator and not the whole alternator?

Saga:
If you are NOT measuring the voltage directly at the alternator post,
then the numbers mean nothing.
Let me put this another way, to be clear:
If you are measuring the voltage at the dash/fuse wiring,
the measurement is NOT reliable.
The poor alternator does not care a whit about what is happening
far away at the dash. It only knows what is happening at its own B+ post!
(Do not replace any parts until certain...)

i am having the same problm but it will charge at 11 volts than i rev the engine to 4000 rpm and the volts will be at 13.8 than thay will go down and back up in my 69 bug replaced the alternator and still doing the same thing but now it stays at 11.8 to 12 volts wheter i rev it up or not. Put new wire on ground and hot still the same.
