this is the only full on super beetle drag car built in the early days. it was chopped and set up for drag racing in 72 or 73. it was owned by a mid western racer named Robert Blessing, and maintained by Tom Moore, and wore the Treuhaft colors, and was originally known as the Hari Canary. in '79 it was purchased by Richard Roy, of chino, ca. and, and campaigned as the Sneaky Turtle III, and later became the Heard It Thru The Grapevine car and raced thru the late 80's. it sat in a field for 14 yrs before i aquired it, and now it has sat in my garage for a year or so. the bondo on the roof is cracked from sitting in the sun for 14 yrs, and it has a small area on lf fender were previous owner bumped into it w/ his truck. it has no motor or trans, but is complete other than that. i even have the berg merged header, and a deep sump, and carb linkage bar that came with it. it is a peice of vw drag racing history, but i am buying a house, so i must liquidate, and unfortunately it must go. thanks for looking
Im pretty sure the Hairy canary was a fairly famous car. I remember the name distinctly. But I dont remember the paint other than a faint memory of a bright yellow racing bugat bug ins I think ? Thats pretty cool. I remember D!ck Roys tho they used to sell Kadron parts when no one else had them.

Man this forum is rediculous. it won't let me print the frickin name
D!ick!!!!! Qeez who are we protecting!

Never saw this pic before but its great . I did see the car eat the guard rail tho at Palmdale. The funny thing is I bought the motor out of this car and never knew it untill I opened it up and then heard rumors later that the motor was stolen. some guy came into a place I was workin at and said he had a sand rail motor for sale. It had superflows andwhen I tore it down I started wondering what the deal was because the thing had Ti valves and all kinds a killer drag race parts. Then the guy gives me the header afterwards and its a big drag merge with a huge guard rail smash. It took me a while to put two and two together but I fianally found out that the Bugpac race car had been sitting up against a fence by some rail road tracks and some gang bangers cut the fence and stole the motor!! I had sold it for parts by then but the guy that ended up with the heads had his whole race car stolen one night from a friends shop after it was almost ready to go. After that I wanted to get rid of anything that was asociated with the motor. I figured the car crashed, the motor was stolen and then a car was stolen with parts from that car so it was cursed :-0 Crazy stuff.

Muffler Mike wrote:not exactly from the early days but from my days as an early teen.

I had my first beer waiting in line to get into OCIR, but cant remember if it was a bug in or drag day. I do remember it was Hieneken out of a keg with chocolet chip cookies. It was a matter of got milk and all my older brother and his friends brought was beer.
Keg (one of two) was in one of the race cars under a cover with the soft dot tires on top.
And i always got there in the back of my brothers toyota pick up truck with car in flat tow behind. Boy was it cold in the mornings going there the entire 45 minutes.
Although i did ride in comfort once. i rode down with one of my brothers friends on a milk crate in his low 13 second oval with a berg 5 speed and exceeded 110 mph once when we were almost rear ended by a drunk. What a rattle box that was.

Those were the days.
Now THATS a Bug in story :-) Smuggling Kegs of good beer into the race in a racecar.
I remember going to huge Bugin partys and staying up all night and then cruising to the race in the wee hours of the morning. Boy by the afternoon there were alot of dead looking people scattered about the pits at the Bugins Ha ha ha!
We continued the tradition by bringing many kegs on road trips to arizona and sacromento VW races. We would bring the keg up into the stands and then sell beer to everyone around us for a buck a glass. we only sold the glass tho...the beer was free :-) At one point we were banned from the sacramento track. The big blue 1970 Caddy convertible with steer horns had been marked and the gate people were told not to let it in no matter who was driving it Ha ha ha!!!

"'54 Chopped Oval Race Car - $4200
I purchased this car 8 years ago from its original owner who had it in storage for many years prior to my taking ownership. It was a regular at New England Dragway many years ago.
I had the paint touched up and new seals installed in the windows. The chassis is a '66 w/ adjustable beam. The rear fenders and doors( Empi) are fiberglas in addition to the 1-pc front end.
I was planning on using it on the street but haven't found the time to accomplish this. There is a wiring harness in the car now but I will be including a new simplified one if you want to rewire. Also included, if desired, are switches and assortment of gauges.
There is no engine!!
It would be nice to see this vintage race car back on the drag strip but it would make a sharp street/strip VW also."

Ahhhhh.Fiat 600.Very special car to me.My grandfather gave me a 59 Fiat 600 in the late 60's.He said I could have it if I got it running. My first automotive project. From flat head lawn mower engine to overhead valves with rocker arms.Took me a while to figure that out.Got it running and off I went. Those have a 600cc water cooled motor in the back with a very small radiator right next to the engine.Max top speed was 55mph.Very cool little car.Smaller than a bug.Weighted 1200 lbs in stock forum. The Fiat was my first car and then Mom's 65 bug a few years later. You actuated the starter from a small lever on the side of the driver simular to a heater lever on a bug.Pushed started that thing many times by myself.I was aware of people installing VW motors in them in the 70's.But sold the car after the 65 bug was mine in the mid 70's.That was one of those cars we wish we had put aside till later years. Thanks Bugs for the the memory picture.

Bugz, that white car is a Fiat 500.Never have seen one of those up close.Mine was a 600D.I do not remember what the D stood for.It was baby blue.So here's the story on how I got that little booger running.
My grandfather gave me that car when I was 14 or 15 in the late 60's.Up until that time,I had only worked flat head Briggs-Stratten type motors. As I'm looking under the trunk/hood at the motor,I notice the hump cover on top of the head.Took the cover off and these arm looking things with rods are attactted to them. What have I got myself into.Rocker arms.Man,I thought everything was a flat head engine at the time.So anyway, somehow I figure out it has a blown headgasket.Off with the head and take it to a machine shop.I get it all put back together somehow and runs like a top.At that time,Penzoil in the thing to use.Change the old oil and put in some racing 20w50 Penzoil.Man I'm set. After a couple of days,I check the oil.The oil on the dipstick is as yellow as the can that it came in.So,I look at the can color, then I look at the dip stick.Ummm yellow can, yellow oil.I guess that's ok.You got to keep in mind being 14 and not to in tune with things.Well, somebody finally hips me that there is water in the oil and Penzoil turns yellow for some reason.Todays oils will turn gray.Turns out that a water jacket plug in the valve cover area is leaking.Reseal the plug and change out my secret racing oil.Yellow oil,I still laugh about that today.
