1.7L runs, but high, idle 2k rpm

Post by Vgonman »

Runs like a champ. Mystery red wire was for the auxiliary air
regulator...........After static timing, it fired right up.

Now, when i hook up my timing light to number 1 or number 3 wire, the idle
drops dramatically.............Huh? Don't know what to do to time it with a
light if i can't use a plug wire................

Also, the screw on throttle body is all the way in, and on the ECU,
too.........all the way down...still idles about 2k........when i hook up
the light, i think it drops that cylinder, and runs about
1400rpm.............what gives?

Timing is off and you have a vacuum leak or a hose hooked up wrong. Is the vacuum retard hose hooked up? The hose that is on the backof the distributor not one the advance can.
Also the AAR valve maybe is stuck open so if it hooked up it should close in about 5 minutes. When cold it leaks air to make the engine idle at 1500rpms.

I do not know about the timing being off..I looked at the notch in the fan shroud and the red line was right in the "V"......

I replaced all the vacuum lines wit new before i fired it up, but this thing that happens when i hooked up a light is wierd...............

Is this an inductive timing light? One that you just clamp the pickup around the plug wire?

If that is the case, then I'd look for plug wires not seating well. And I'd look for plug wires that are bad.

It is a snap on light that has one lead to clamp onto the plug wire, and one hot and one ground to generate the display on the meter....just does advance and timing, not dwell.......

I am going to swap coils and see what happens.
