Best 2.0 Exhaust

Post by radavidson »

I am installing a 2.0 in my 74 914, it has a Monza exhust with it. I've read that the stock 2.0 exhust is probably the best for a stock 2.0. I know I can gain a lot with exhaust in a Type I motor, what is the optimum exhast for a Type IV 2.0 motor. What are the characteristics of the Monza, is it worth it to spend the money for the original Hot dog exhaust?

TIA

The Monza is inexpensive. It's also cheap. The four-tip setup looks "kewl" to some, tacky to others. It's loud and doesn't really seem to offer any power over stock. It also seems to rust out in 8.6 seconds. Image

For real HP gains, you have to go with a full-on tuned header setup. The absolute best of those being Tangerine Racing's setup--but be sitting down when you look at the price. The least expensive is the Kerry-Hunter one, and it only loses a handful or two of HP to the Tangerine Racing ones. Still not exactly cheap.

Using the SSI heat exchangers:
1. Mittlemotors SS muffler-$350 cost- about a 3hp gain over a stocker
2. Triad's exhaust-$350 cost- somewhere around 3hp gain, will dyno these units soon.
3. Bursch exhaust- $175 cost- 3 hp at mid rpm-sounds like crap
4. Stock banana- quiet
5. All the rest- lose hp and sound crappy
Geoff
Real hp comes from Chris's header unit about 9-10 hp but no heat

Kerry's is 3 less HP for 500 less dollars, I can live with that...

Do you have any dyno runs or any other info to support you claim that Tangerines is the absolute BEST exhaust out there? I like Chris and believe that he knows what hes doing and talking about, just wondering about what backup you have for that claim...

Grassroots Motorsports did a article about 2 months ago. They tested a bunch of exhaust systems on a dyno and Chris's was the best by far.

I want to run heat, so that knocks a couple of these off the list, I would like a nice throaty Porsche sound. The additional HP is not a requirement. It sounds like the stock will do, or is that to quite?

The stock is pretty quiet when new and sounds tinny when older.
To fake people out thinking you have a six get the Triad exhaust as it sounds like a 911, deep and throaty!

Whatever its worth,

From Grassroots Motorsports 2-2002...

Peak:
CFR 111.9 @ 5100 RPM
KH 111.3 @ 5100 RPM
Stock 106.9 @ 5000 RPM

The biggest difference:

CFR 86.5 @ 3700 RPM
KH 82.0 @ 3700 RPM

Thats on a stock FI 2.0L....

a slight correction,

The biggest hp difference:
CFR 79.4 @ 3400 RPM
KH 73.3 @ 3400 RPM
Stock 72.9 @ 3400 RPM

The Super Header made consistently (up to 10 ft-lbs over KH) more torque from 3000 RPM up to the torque peak of 4200 RPM.

...And the 2.0 was not exactly stock. Stock displacement, I believe, and it was running D-jet EFI. But the compression had been raised, the cam swapped out, the heads worked, etc.

Yes, every data point is an average of the data from three consecutive pulls. That was done to eliminate false spikes in the data. However three is too small a sample size for truly accurate data, from a statistical perspective. In each data set the engine was run up to the same initial oil temperature before data was generated.

All I know:

Racer Chris' system has made over 20HP difference on my dyno in back to back testing against 4 other systems.

Chris' system doesn't leak, and actually fits without remaking the entire thing...

If memory serves me, The hp numbers posted in GRM's article were averages? I thought it stated that they had peaks of 120 hp, but wanted to relay averages so as to keep the numbers "real world". I dunno

I emailed Triad over a week ago and have gotten no response. I guess I'll call and order the Triad, I hope they answer their phone.

I picked up a [barely] used Triad /6 muffler for a really 'cheep' price last year ($150.) - thought I'd experiment with it (on 2.0L/2056 /4) while I'm prepping a 2.7L /6.

I like the deep throaty sound coming from the few cars I've run across equipped with their mufflers.

I've been to their site several times, but never attempted contact with them ... let us know if you get through to them :?:
