Erik,
The late 69 through 72, 2.0L is a six cylinder engine. If this is what you are looking for, they are quite availible but, expensive. If you mean a 2.0L four banger, they will be much less expensive however, they can be made to produce far more hp than a stock 2.0L six.

Yeah I'm looking for the four. I guess I really ment mid '70s. Pre '74 would be best because I live in Ca and if the engine is from before 1974 it doesnt have to be smoged.

No real difference between 73 and 74 engines, not even the serial numbers. They both start with "GA", which is usually all the inspectors care about. The "GB" (European) or "GC" (75-76) could cause a problem if the inspector noticed.

Erik, what type of car are you puting the engine into? In cali if the vehicle the engine resides in is pre-'73 it Doesn't have to be smogged, reguardless of what year the engine is from. Hope this helps in your search

The six cylinder you are thinking about was in the 914-6. It was a 2.2 and very limited in production. Ray

Hate to beat a dead horse, but the 6 cylinder in the 914-6 was actually a 2.0l six, 110bhp, same motor used in '69 911 I believe.

You may be right about the 914-6, if so that would make it differnt than the 911 if memory serves. I was thinking they were the same in those years, which is why I thought it was a 2.2. The 911 was a 2.2 in earliest form. The production #'s I read somewhere on the 914-6 were incredibly low...like in the 6000 range...if that many.

The first 911s had a 2.0 liter engine through 1969. In 1970 they introduced the 2.2. At the same time they introduced the 914-6 which had the early 911 base 2.0 engine and the 914-4 1.7 liter so the 911 would be at the top of the line. Production on the 914-6 ran partway through the 1971 model year with total prod. # of less than 2000 cars. The chassis were too expensive from VW and sales price was too close to the 911 to attract customers in sufficient #'s to maintain production.

Hopefully the spacing below works out:
. Year . . 70 . . . 71 . . 72 . Total
914/6 . 2,637 + 402 + 260 = 3,299
Just over 3000 914-6es produced. A bare handful of 72 models, none of which were officially imported to the US.
The 911 started with a 130 HP 2.0 liter engine. The "S" was introduced, making something on the order of 165 HP. Then in 1969 the "911" was discontinued, and the "T" (110 HP) and "E" (~140 HP) were introduced. All were 2.0 liters. The 69 911S and the 911E ran MFI (Mechanical Fuel Injection), while the T was carb'ed.
In 1970, the 911 displacement got bumped to 2.2 liters. Power was up across the board (~120 HP T, ~150 HP E, ~175 HP S). The 914-6 was introduced with the 1969 911T 2.0-liter motor, making 110 HP. The E and S were still MFI, the T was still carb'ed.
In 72, the displacement for all 911s was bumped to 2.4 liters, with a corresponding power increase. The 911T finally lost the carbs and got the MFI. ~140 HP T, ~160 HP E, 190 HP S. In mid-year 73, the 911T was converted over to CIS injection. Compression was increased to keep the power the same, even with the milder cams that the CIS required over the MFI.
...Then in 74 the 911s went down-hill for a while. But that's a story for another note.
