914 engine upgrade

Post by uk_luke »

Hi everyone,

I'm a relatively new '14 owner. My 2.0 was imported to england from california in February this year, and I bought it in May. The car is in great condition throughout, so my main goal for next season is an engine upgrade.

My motor is totally stock. I'm basically looking to prepare the car to be a daily driver when the weather gets better. But I also want it to perform, and rip it up on the strip next year!!

As an extreme, I have had a quote from a local specialist for an engine build to replace mine. My knowledge of engines does not stretch too far, so if anyone could run thier eyes over the specs i've been given and let me know what you think. It won't fit here as an attatchment, so mail me at [email protected] and i'll send you a copy.

Alternitavely, was is the most straightforward way of getting as much more power out of my current engine?

I really am keen to get a punchy little daily driver....

I you reply, could you try an bear in mind i don't know alot about the technical side of things when it comes to engines..!?

thanks,

luke.

visit my website www.tangerineracing.com and look at the 914 Super Header. This is the single best bolt on improvement you can make to a stock engine. Also read the latest Grassroots Motorsports article about dyno testing their project 914 engine.

Then ask the Guy who has the most powerful street T4 in the UK where he would go.

Hiya, Chris! I hope you'll take the time to share a bit of your exhaust-design info with us at some point.

I haven't looked to see if you've gotten on that thread yet, but there is a thread on the Type IV BBS elsewhere on this site that mentions your 912E exhaust specifically.

I'm new to this BBS and not registered at this time so I can't post to the T4 board.
I saw the thread about exhaust designs and would like say this is not an easy task. My system was designed by Bill Beekhuis 20 or so years ago. The principal purpose was to fatten the midrange of the type 4. It was fabricated in CA by Pete Weber until I took over in '98. I've been tweaking it to eliminate some bugs and to make fabrication a little easier. It features short primaries (26.5" or so). Its a tri-y, has stub pipes, features a cool muffler called the Phase 9 Silencer. Everything is hand fabricated using tube bends so its expensive (just the 1-5/8" header is $750). Anyone who thinks they can save by going it alone - good luck! I already figured out how to route the tubes for a 912E, and its just a matter of time for me to set up for Beetle conversions too. Anyone truly interested should get my email address from the website and drop me a line. I'll gladly reply with more info. I currently run two 914 race cars. One is a 150hp 1717cc 8000rpm redline dry sump F Production regional champion 2 years running (I did everything to the car and engine except the head work), the other is a 180+hp 2.2liter shortstroke 7500rpm redline in a nearly stock chassis (but not for long). Both have the 1-5/8" primary header, but the 1-3/4" setup should up the HP a bit more. The F Production car is also a killer autocross machine when I feel like a little crosstraining. I'm also working on another 914 which will probably be a dedicated autocrosser. Check out www.tangerineracing.com & lets talk.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that the FP engine has a very trick flat mounted corvair fan for cooling with a special shroud made by Jay Putnam of Competition Motors.

I just looked at the pics of Dan's LA Perf header. Now I see what the squeeze factor is. I'll rework my tailpipe to make it fit. Looks like the muffler will probably stick out the back. Maybe I could put it crossways instead of straight out. Opinions?
BTW at 3500rpm the Superheader made over 6hp more than KHunter. That's almost 10 percent. Also that test used the first header I ever made, before I officially took over from Pete Weber. For what its worth my header sounds way better too! Image

Chris, would your 912E header be good for a turbo installation, or do you recommend a shorter header?

Hi Jay,

I am not an exhaust system designer, just a race car fabricator, so I'm not really qualified to answer this question. From what I'm told though, with turbos the shorter the exhaust the better. I would guess that my header would work but is not optimum and at a minimum the tubes should be rerouted to improve the turbo location so the throttle body inlet tube is much shorter. Someone else here might be able to shed greater light on this question.
