O ya it would be awesome if it works out.

My setup has the radiator up front but its concealed by the hood. It cycles normaly while cruzing around town but any sustained driving 45 mph plus it turns on all the time.

I am fixing this issue....but not quite sure how yet. Still in the works lol

decided to have a go at the exhaust myself. at least make it drivable for now.
Time to step it up and learn to tig, what better way to do that than building an exhaust?(there are probably much better ways)

Was just going to buy some pipe but figured i'd contributed to this one local muffler shop enough that maybe they would hook it up with some scrap for cheap. low and behold, they just gave it to me so i'm only out the welding materials so far.

this was my first grab but i'm planning on swinging by again for some more as the manager said to come back anytime.
had pretty good luck welding the 2" together with no filler as long as i got the pieces butted together pretty well. I know it isn't the prettiest but this is my second time with the tig ever. criticism welcome.


not sure if this will make it on the car in the end or not but its worth the practice. doing a few piecuts to turn backwards from the factory manifold position. Any issue welding the factory manifold material to this mild exhaust pipe?

That's a pretty decent first effort with a TIG. Keep going. By the end of that exhaust, you'll be really neat.

been tossing the idea around about a everlast or a alpha tig

what machine ya using?

Thank you guys! glad to have a chance to learn something that i've always wanted to be able to do.

My wife bought me the Alphatig for xmas after a friend recommended it. Cheap enough to get going and has the ability to weld aluminum so i'm not complaining at all

I have a 4 day weekend coming up so i hope to make some serious progress during that time

Nothing like sharpening the electrode just to get it stuck 2 seconds into a weld. Can't tell you how many times i did it but that is the biggest motivator to get better at this.

Trying to get used to it and steady my hand. when i can i use the cup but not always able to.
I'm currently running a trigger, seems easier than the foot pedal to me while standing.
Also switched to a 1/16" electrode and filler and that helped tremendously with the thinner pieces.

Welp, i was going to try to use at least a little of the factory manifold but that didn't give me enough clearance so i took it down to the flange.




Quickly learned that the most tedious part would be cleaning up the edges



had a little trouble welding the thick ass flange to a thin mild pipe but got the hang of it... ish



A friend was helping who is equally as new/bad with a tig so we definitely overdid some of the welds to make sure they fully penetrated and filled any gaps so some parts are super ugly but i'm hoping it'll get better each time.

Man, that's hardcore. I would have just bought a few mandrel bends and used them instead. But you're doing well there.

got the other header built, i know its not the best but I'm getting better so i'll take it. less filler too


Also realized the inlets for this old monza style muffler i have(from when the car was still air-cooled) are about the same size as the piping I'm running.
Thinking that instead of merging the two sides on the passenger side(similar to the factory manifold) then going to a muffler and out, this might just do and save me a ton of work, at least for the time being. Anyone see any issue running this?

i can't imagine there should be with a 1.8, especially as tiny as that factory exhaust was.

Had to move a coolant pipe a bit to make it fit but it wasn't too bad and I'm definitely glad i went with the "flexible" hoses. quotes because they are a major PITA to bend or reform
