Supercharged 1600 EFI - Dyno Video Page 6

Post by MarioVelotta »

It's been really busy around the shop and I haven't posted much in a long time, but last month I decided it was time to bolt a supercharger to my car. I have already done everything elso to this poor little longblock, so why not.

What's already been done
  • Mexican Single TB EFI - 59hp / 87tq
2014-12-02 20.53.58.jpeg
  • Mexican Single TB EFI Turbo (9spi)- 91hp / 115tq

  • Dual 38mm ITB EFI - 63hp / 78tq
My setup.jpg

What is next
  • Mexican Single TB on Custom Manifold AMR500 EFI
What I am hoping to do is replicate the turbo output at 10psi with much more bottom end torque. The turbo I used didn't come on until 3500 and that's no good on a 1600 with a stock cam

Oh yeah, I've seen that around here :)

Once I fix up the slipping clutch and get a little seat time I want to also add a turbo. That will be super cool!

I like the idea, from what I can gather that is designed for sub 1 liter econo boxes...probably close fit to the given the age/output of a stockish motor.
Is that running in updraft? Have you figures out a compressor bypass for off loading pressure when throttle closes?
Yeah some may call it overkill, but you can't have too much overkill.

Since I'm EFI the charger is only moving air, and it does enter from the bottom. And the throttle body is pre supercharger. When the throttle closes the charger goes into vacuum, so it doesn't require a bypass.

Very Nice Mario!

I had also a amr500 on my H engine (upgraded to 1600cc, DP heads, stock cam, 1.25 lifters) 1 dual carb.
Must say it was pulling very much harder then the dual kadron setup on this engine. You could really feel the push in you back  (In my vw splitscreen)

Very cool you got all different setups with the dyno results. Looking forward to see how you new setup will perform.

So will the turbo outlet go to the top ofthrTB?

Or next to the blower outlet to the end castings?

That's really cool Mario! By far the neatest/simplest supercharger setup I've ever seen on a VW. I gather you drew up the brackets and the like. Keen to see the figures. Are you planning some sort of intercooler?

It has taken several years to do, but I think it is worth the effort. Thanks!

I have a few details to work out still, but they will feed the throttle body in parallel. What I think will be easiest for me is to have the turbo feed the SC inlet. This is because the SC will easily pull air through the compressor. Then when the turbo does start to spool and overpower the blower I will have to incorporate a bypass of some sort to allow the turbo to go around the SC and not through it.

Thank you Pete 8) Yes I have everything in cad so parts are easily changed. I only have one maybe 2 more revision before I think I can offer the brackets and flanges for sale by themselves.

As for an intercooler, I will reuse the one I had in place for my 2.2L turbo setup. The holes are still in the firewall, bonus! But initially, I need to run without it so I can figure out the temperatures produced and see how manageable they are and at what boost level it becomes a problem. Once I gather all that information I will put the cooler in place and go for the moon. At that point I will also start on the turbo install. With any luck at all. This will all happen in parallel with my dedicated 1600 turbo long block coming together and I can put a bigger turbo on it that originally intended

Here is how it all started. I need to upgrade some EFI end castings.
-

I cut off the stock inlets of the EFI ends castings

-

After that, I cut some 2" X .125" Aluminum tube to weld onto the ends.
stub tubes.jpg
-

The thick ID of the tubes slides onto the end castings almost perfect.

-

I kinda threw together a fixture to weld the tubes on. Later I made a tool that is much easier and I can do it in half the time.
weld jig.jpg
-

I also welded the inside so they could be ported easily.

-

And then I was ready to start on the new 2" intake manifold Wye section.

Stay tuned for the rest of the process so far :)

Here was my initial thought but I got feedback that the TB needed to be before the AMR500 Supercharger.

Why would the TB need to be before the blower? I don't get it.
