Custom Plenum for stock type 4 FI runners: inspiration needed

Post by larsje »

Hi!

Have been reading for a while now here.

I am gathering parts and info for an EFI conversion for my '72 baywindow.

Will be a MS2 based ECU

I want to use the stock runners (have a set from a 1.7 FI 914 already)

Original idea was to modify a 2L stock type 4 plenum to fit a different throttle body, however, in the stock location, there is no space to fit a more modern TB (similar to pictured:)

Now the idea is to fabricate a custom plenum for this throttle body to connect to the stock runners.

Now i am looking for some inspiration, i have some ideas myself, but do not want to have to re-invent everything.

So if anyone has some examples of custom plenums for stock Type 4 runners, please post them!

HI BR,
seeing this is very common throttle body you may also get additional replys from the Samba Performance News Group

Thanks, will have a look over there.

Any custom plenums matched to the stock runners would be cool to see!
(can't imagine no-one ever built something like this)

Joe,
Why on earth would you refer anyone over to TOS?

The FI forum here will have far more smart people.

Now, if he were looking for advice on headlight eyebrows or tissue dispensers, or such, It would make sense.

OTOH,

The OP posted a question that is similar to something floating around in my own head.

To the OP: why are you planning on using this TB?
TPS is my guess..

Some have had good success adapting a TPS from another car (Ford 2.3 IIRC?) to the OG bus TB.
The waterboxer uses a bit larger TB if you wanted more.

There have been other good posts from Ray and Pile Re: fabbing up a bigger plenum.

Maybe try your post here? --> viewforum.php?f=23

ECU I'm planning can use these including the "idle control" function (no idle valve needed) and the TB's are very available in various diameters over here in Europe.

Do a bit of reading around on the stock plenums. They are actually a pretty good design. The bus 2.0 plenum and the 1.7L 411/412/914 plenum are both better than the 2.0L 914 plenum...shape wise....though the 1.7L will be too small for a 2.0.

The side entrance plenum and runner set up has much less turbulence than the 2.0L 914. Ray

Ray, thanks for the input.
My actual first plan was to use a 2L bus plenum (bought one some time ago) and mount the TB on the stock location:

This will however, collide with the firewall i am afraid (need to measure again)
