Alternator stand
Hi, is there still someone selling an alternator stand for the upright cooling? I mean other then Jake Raby's stand, which needs to be modified when used with the type 1 shroud...
Thanks.
Thanks.

Re: Alternator stand
I can only think of two upright kits (excluding DTM/Porsche and Porsche'ish);
http://www.sharpbuilt.com.au/sharpbuilt1/page11.htm VW STYLE TYPE IV FAN KIT
and
CSP's ww.csp-shop.com/cgi-bin/cshop2/front/shop_main.cgi?nocache=1309754010&func=det&rub1=Products&rub2=Engine,Cooling%20System&artnr=13261b# Type-4 Upright Conversion
Neither seem to offer ala'carte

Yeah some may call it overkill, but you can't have too much overkill.

Re: Alternator stand
It's really not that hard to make one from scratch from Nextgens directions.
I used Bay Bus rear seat "T" bolts as the clamp//connection between the cut down T1 stand and the 1/2" aluminum base for extreme adjustability.
No welder, just sawzall/file/drill. Has never moved AFAICT.
No, it doesn't look "factory". Works was my only priority.
SOMEONE was fabbing some nice welded units awhile back, but I have slept since then.

Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

Re: Alternator stand
Not hard to make one, indeed, but i was shooting for the factory look . I made one for the vanagon case which is in service now, but i'll be using the open breather style case.
Someone was making a nice (very) adjustable one, but i can't remember either.
I'll look for a Type 1 stand and see what comes out without welding...

Re: Alternator stand
Ran it through search, Nate and speedy57tub were working on stand designs at one point, might want to check with them for updates.
Sharp's kits are pretty reasonable, and the shipping didn't look as bad as I expected.
The stock T4 oil cooler location option is nice, should fit late cars fine.
If (when) I do another upright I'll probably try to track down the "tins" in FG, IIRC someone was making just the "tins" for a sane price, or talking about it, you know how that goes.
OTOH I've been looking at making a horizontal 914 cooling setup using a T1 fan... that sucks up from underneath and exhausts out hoses on top, rather than blows down, as bottom up is how the airflow wants to be on a 914. (even if the cold air gets ducted in from NACA ducts on the rockers, there's ~actually room for it, maybe)
Note:that is strictly an exercise in curiosity leaning towards the deranged.
It could also be used as a leaf vac.

Re: Alternator stand
A newish Mexi-stand has more room and usually hasn't had as many years of grease absorbed
into the metal...

Re: Alternator stand
You do have to be careful some stands are Magnesium and not Alum.
Hit it with a torch and you will be in for a big surprise.
If you go to my site you will see my stand , was welded and looks stock!!

Iv'e been collecting the bits needed for a conversion including a alt stand. Now Ive just read that some are Mag and some Alum and some weld better than others.
Q: before i start cutting and chopping ready to weld, how can I tell the difference between the two?

Re: Alternator stand
Any new stand you buy now will be aluminum. Mag stands were from the 60's or early 70's as far as I know.

Re: Alternator stand
Best idea, that price includes VAT, so it should run about that shipped to the US. (no VAT)

Sadly CIP1 doesn't carry the CSP conversion parts in the US, just some of their T1 bits.
