I am no expert on every carb but I believe the Super came with a 34 PICT-3 until they went FI , wasn't the 28 on some single ports ?

Most 28 Pict era carbs have choke holes that only fit 6 volt choke elements.
Maybe you should post a picture of what you have?
Yeah some may call it overkill, but you can't have too much overkill.

Why not put the correct carb on your 74 Beetle , a 34pict3 , if you have a dual port 1600 ?

28PICT and PICT-1 were for 1200cc Beetle engines. 30PICT-1 came on 1300 and 1500 (the `67 version has a power fuel system, earlier ones don't). 30PICT-2 were on `68/`69 1500 - VW's first attempt at an "emissions" carb, and not one I'd recommend. The last small-flange stock carb was the 30PICT-3 on the 1970 1600SP.

Any of the 30PICTs would be better unless your engine's a 1200. With the stranded accelerator cable of the `74 I'd recommend staying with a late 30PICT-1 or newer which has the self-contained return spring (adding that to an earlier carb results in poor geometry which can cause it to stick at wide-open-throttle).

The "large-diameter" choke element will fit any Type I carb from 28PICT-1 through 34PICT-4, it's not a rare item.

Try to avoid the early style with a ceramic shell and a single rivet attaching the terminal, the newer ones in a metal case with two rivets are more durable. 113 129 191G
