Hi all I'm new to the forum as well as the vw world. I started a build thread on The samba but felt it would be better to keep it here and update it where like minded builders could help. This is the first time I've ever done a full rebuild or anything turbo related so any advice is welcome
A quick catch up here.
So I have a 1973 beetle that I have started working on. I have moved up to a 1776 and plan on turbo charging it.
If there is little to no shaft play in that turbo I wouldn't bother rebuilding it. Those turbos are bulletproof and hold up for at least 100,000 miles if not more.
I have 3 of them in my garage as I speak and not one needed any rebuild.
I pay between $20.00-$60.00 for them and if they have shaft play I walk away. Most of the time they are still in great shape.
I have had excellent results with my TD04L-13T on my 1679cc engine and I am sure you will have even better performance with yours on a 1776.
Go find a set of 4 hi-res Bosch injectors at 45-50 lbs/hr. and you will be good for almost anything you want to throw at that engine. That turbo will support up to 270 hp so get injectors that will handle that much depending on the type of fuel you will be running.
I run Water/Alcohol injection on my engine to keep the detonation in check. I haven't found the space for an Intercooler yet.
I recommend you get an Intercooler installed if you have the room. Chip B. and others have had great results with the Water/Air barrel coolers and a reservoir with pump to circulate the water.
It's nice to see someone else stepping up to MS EFI. There are plenty of us here that are running MS2 or MS3 and I don't think anyone would ever think of going back to a carb. I know I wouldn't.
There is a learning curve to it but once you get it down it is sooo much nicer than pulling carbs to rejet.
Most of us are just driving our turbo cars or buggies instead of working on them.......well......except for upgrades..........

The turbo needed the rebuild the shaft was in two halves. Seems the rear bearing shattered and locked the shaft up.
Just finished rebuilding the turbo today.
I'm looking into ordering one of Mario's Mexican fuel injection setups. Would there be any issues with running larger injectors for a low boost setup. Wanna start low then build up. I know i won't stay with less then 10psi for long haha
Also going to try to start the MS2 build... kind of nervous since I know little about electrical things good thing I can solder that's half the work. Any advice on setting up the system as i build it would be welcomed

I have bought a used MS-1 from him and second a used Ver. 3 MS-2 that I had him fix then mod for all the extras I needed.
I think he is quite reasonable on MS work so I never bother since I would have to get all the tools plus build a Stim for testing.
I bring it to him and he does what I need.......I doubt with my eyes I could solder that stuff anyways........
A Mexican setup is pretty nice for turbo but you will find a limit on hp flow through them. Mario knows how much they are good for if that will keep you happy for a while.
Since CB Performance doesn't make the stock style replacement EFI intake endpieces it is one of the few options available right now for single TB.
As for the turbo make sure the compressor or turbine wheel hasn't contacted the housings. That would not be good.

Going to try to build it myself. I have the pre built stim so I can catch any errors I might make.
I cleaned up the openings with some 600 grit and everything looks good clearance wise.
I'm okay with the limit it will keep me out of trouble until I get more money and time haha
Just ordered a relay board and a few other wiring addons to help with the MS2 install when I get to it. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I should wire that into the care.
I'm also thinking of replacing my wiring assembly within the car. The previous owner made a mess of the wiring and I dont trust it all that much.
8:1 should make a lot of fun. I was at 8.7:1 and it was nuts. I later went to 7.3 :1 to keep the detonation down. really took the kick out but turned up the boost.

I'll have to keep an on eye on things then. Glad the compression will give me the fun even when the boost is off
Got myself a how to solder kit just to practice on before I move on to the more costly megasquirt. I've solder wiring before but never a motherboard so it was a good learning experience. I also brought a build a radio board to make before I dive into the ECU .
So I've hit a wall that really shows my lack of knowledge.
I was planning on running an edis wasted spark coil from a Ford and wanted to do away with the module and run the coil directly from the ms. After reading the manual a 1000 times over I'm no closer to understanding what i need to add/wire to the board.
Kind of wish the pictures were easier to follow for us "newbies" haha
