Re: Cheap Junk 1971 Build
When I opened my gasket set for this engine the plastic vibration dampeners that go on the main bearing bolts were not supplied. A couple of enquiries on another site led me to a supplier of these little plastic bits... at $7+ each! So $7 x 6 + shipping + exchange on the US dollar and we are up to over $60! For 6 little plastic sleeves!! Hmmm... Gotta be another way...
Here is what I came up with. $7 for a hundred! Fit nicely! In fact if you poke them a bit they will slide right inside the holes so I am thinking for the price I will slide one in each half and leave one in the center on each bolt.

Sorry, that should read $60 for the plastic bits! Not sure how to edit on this site.
Never mind! I found it!

Impressed by the great ingenuity, but for some reason while looking at the pictures I kept thinking "OwOwOwOw..."
Each post you make has 4 icons in the upper right... Left one sorta looks like a pencil... That's edit.

OwOwOwOwOw...!!!
Look what my thread has come to..
Never really sure the whole deal with the 'vibration dampener' thing...
Did the case thru-bolts really need dampening?
I'm still betting they were an ease of assembly thing..
I mean, what are the actual symptoms/suffering these fixed?
Can't be nearly as bad as for calves under 250 pounds..

Ooops! Sorry Clatter!
I didn't mean to turn your good thread into a lesson on how to discourage would be suitors of your daughters!
(It may take some 'splainin' to city kids but out here in cattle country a pre-date initiation threat with the plyers and rubber rings changes minds real quick!)
Back on topic, the replies I got on another forum indicated there was a need to stop any harmonic effects with those bolts. I really don't know so I erred on the side of caution.
In any event it will eliminate any potential lost sleep.
With the bolts too!!

Just to give you an idea of the potential for trouble I could be facing without those handy little latex rings...

Are those A/C line O rings? The picture loaded late. Would fat O Rings have worked?

Nope. The first picture tells exactly what they are. Yes I believe fat O rings would work too.theKbStockpiler wrote: ↑Mon May 01, 2017 7:00 pm Are those A/C line O rings? The picture loaded late. Would fat O Rings have worked?

Back on a serious note: Is it normal for the cam thrust bearing to be tight? I mean not just no clearance but... tight? Non sure whether to trim the cam thrust surface a bit or sand the bearing.

Re: Cheap Junk 1971 Build
Sand the bearing, BUT--- Install the cam and bearings with the block snugged up around the cam at least, and give the cam a love tap forward/back first. (brass drift, doesn't take much to seat things)
THEN sand on 1000 grit wet or dry on a glass plate to low end of the spec.

Don't sand the bearing! Don't cut the case, use a hammer instead with the cam plug and oil pump out.
Large brass drift is the tool of choice, not sandpaper.

Yeah some may call it overkill, but you can't have too much overkill.

Re: Cheap Junk 1971 Build
Its usually not needed, but sometimes just "seating" it doesn't provide enough.

Re: Cheap Junk 1971 Build
Finally seeing my way clear to get back to this engine build and now it's time to plant the potatoes! Maybe tonight I can give it a love tap and see if it looseness up a bit.
