Choice of gearbox for my bay window

Post by justin pane »

I have a bay camper van which needs a gear box change, I have the choice of a DK 2lt with a 0.82 4th gear and a DK with a 0.70 4th gear, both boxes are converted to fit a bay.
The van is used for touring. would the 0.70 4th be too tall (engine fitted to the van is a oxyboxer 2.1lt
thanks for any advice

Yes it would be nice to have a 5th, lets hope this may be the next best thing.
I am at present fitting the box so I'll see how it goes

Hey Justin, my 70 bay has a 2110cc
w110 cam
stock valved heads 'Fluffed'
deep sump/full flowed
1 3/8 header W stock heat exchangers :roll
removed the 3rib 5:37 R&P and installed a 5 rib from a 75 bus 4:86
Next will be a 6 rib with the 4:57
I do run a small upper pulley from a 356/912 Porsche and at 70+mph she screams for 5th
hills are no problem in 4th gear @ 1/4 throttle and when I step on it it throws you back in the seat,, UP HILL  8)

Hi Mike with a strong motor like yours you certainly need a 6 rib 4.57 diff.
the box I'm just taking out is a 6 rib 4.57 diff but has a 0.82 4th (0.89 it normally fitted in a 2Lt box) and I don't think its high enough for motorway driving. The 0.7 4th will give me 69 mph at 3000 rpm, but hills ? I'll let you know
ps its a nice engine you have.

The 4.57 w/ .70 would be WAY too tall for what you have, IMO.

I'm running a 4.57 FD with 0.82 4th gear. It gives nice rpm for cruising but I struggle on steeper hills when fully laden. There's a big gap from 3rd to 4th and my (rather peaky) 1911 cc motor finds it hard to bridge the gap if you get caught out and let the speed drop. I'm going to 2056 cc with EFI and a milder cam and I think this will be ideal with the box as it is. 0.70 4th gear would be a really big gap and you'd want a lot of torque to pull that gear on the hills.
