Rocky Frankensquare build thread.

Post by jgm_72 »

Hello all, I am building a '72 square for my wife, We got this project about a year and a half or so ago. It was last regestered in O.K. in '07. I'm assuming that it was wrecked right around that time.
before-square.JPG
This is one of the only pictures I have of this car from when we first got him home. Notice its a late model in this picture.
Originaly, Rocky was going to be stripped for parts. We were working out the notch deal and the po told me he had this late model auto square that he also had. He told me about the accident and all. I told him I would bring a trailer big enough for both, but wasnt sure yet if we would take the square or not until we saw it the following weekend. (plannde notch pickup day)
So, we get there (me, my wife and a club buddy) and my wife saw the back of the square and got that smile, the smile that all husbands fear. The one that means that now we have to hand over some money cause Momma wants that, and when Momma aint happy, aint no one happy!!! :D
THe deal was struck and the notch and square were loaded on the trailer and brought home to Outhaus Customs. Thats our shop name, its a very small oppreation. I sell some used parts locally and work on some club members cars.

At home at the Outhaus. We got home at like 4am so we unloaded the next day in the daytime.
As you may be able to see, the nose was cut off mid gas tank forward. With the 2 cars came many parts, including a '66 front clip from the dash forward originally intended to go on this car.
The first order of buisness was to graft on the 66 front clip. Unfortunatly my camera was broken by this time (wouldnt focus) and the cell phone i was taking pics with took a crap also, so no pics are around of the graft  But I do have pics of the nose mostly done!

At this point, I was really digging the car alot now( I dont care for the late model nose). The only issues i was having was its ride height :| . It looked ok, but... what was wrong? Too high, thats what!
Around the same time I was stripping a '58 beetle I had, (trans raise, air ride, patina and a metric boat load of rust). This car (beetle) was bought off a club member. Due to the height off the ground the po rolled it (1/2in off ground literally!) the pan was JUNK!! I did the air ride about 2yrs ago with all custom built parts. Anyway, while it looked awesome, a piece of rust came loose one day while driving and lodged itself in my right eyeball causing a trip to the er and to an eye specialist  ! I promply said F' YOU CAR! Point of that little sub story is to lead up the fact that the 58 ended up in the scrap pile and the air stuff ended up on the shelf. Remember before I was saying it wasnt low enough, well...
New plan!! After a brief meeting with the owner (my wife) we decided to use some of the leftover parts out of the beetle for this project

THE OLD PLAN: graft on the nose, drop the front a little, prime it, and roll it
THE REVISED PLAN: air ride (to lay pan), body drop (to lay rocker) type 3 beam, torsion housing raise, frame head raise, make it all work correctly
squareback pan airride 001.jpg
body off, pan being stripped
squareback pan airride forum pic 9.JPG
to get the pan closer to the ground I had to clearance the junk out of the torsion housing
squareback pan airride forum pic 10.JPG
Not to fear, everything will be re enforced later on in the build. Next I moved up front. The plan to use the type 3 beam is mainly due to money. It came with the car so no money was spent on it. The downfall was the front end sat fairly high even with no torsions due to balljoint bind, This was holding the front end up 3 3/4" off the ground on 165s. You can see what I mean in this picture, pan all the way down
squareback pan airride forum pic 11.JPG
Wasnt low enough, so time to break out the various metal cutters and fix this issue! No pictures of the beam raise as of now, my camera is at the shop and Im home. I raised the beam mounts 4 1/4" so the pan sets on the ground. The front end is only in the mock up stage as of now. We fit the body back on to see where everything sits. After the body was put back on and the wheel wells were clearanced (pretty well removed out back) it was time to step back, take it all in and check where Im at.
squareback pan airride forum pic 6.JPG
Looks good, but some other issues have come up, such as setting the auto trans pan/ bottom of motor on the ground, sitting on the center torsion housing mount, and no clearance up front between tires and fenders, even on 145s up front.
The next update will be soon, I have been working on the torsion housing raise to eliminate the trans/engine issue. This will also help with the body drop. Speaking of body drop, I ask you, stf members, should I go to the pinch weld or eliminate the pinch weld and go flat on the rocker?
I will leave you for now with a few more pics and a promise to take some pictures of the front end, while its far from being done, you will be able to get a feel for what I have in store! Any input is welcome and thanks for reading. Feel free to ask any questions, Im not the best at putting thoughts to key strokes.

Sorry for the broken promises... I said I would update like a month ago, but life kind of got in the way. Im back now. The beetle Ive been working on turned out to be a bigger rot box then expected so thats still in the shop. Back to rocky... due to the car being "body dropped" I felt the best way to accomplish my goals on this car I felt a 1 1/2" torsion housing raise was in order. From there Ive been working on removing 1" from the back seat floor drop. Once accomplished, I should be right about at the rocker pinchweld. The 1/2" difference between the floor and the torsion housing front mount crossmember should keep that crossmsmber/mount off the tarmac. That part doesnt seem like the best piece to scrape down! It is very cold in the shop these days so its hard to get quality time there these days, but Im trying my best to keep trudging forward!
**** I didnt resize the pictures small enough and I have to go to work Ill re-resize them tonight and post them up****

Some may be thinking, "but Jay, what about the body in the rear?" Im raising the floor in the rear according. Others may ask, "but Jay, why raise the torsion housing 1 1/2" but only raise the rear of the floor 1"?" I dont want the car teetering on the front crossmember/mount so the remaining 1/2" will allow the car to rest and/or drag no the floor pans instead of the mount. If there are any other questions or suggestions feel free to post it up. I will update soon with more progress and more imporntant more pics! Anything you guys wanna see better, let me know and Ill gladly snap some different angles

Thanks guys! Well the square has been on hold due to the fact that its a family owned project and I have a customer car Ive been working on. The good news is that the heater channel Ive been waiting on for the beetle will be here tomorrow. Im hoping to have the beetle done by mid feb. so I can get back on Rocky! I should be getting a parts notch for another project I have around the same time. We have lots of projects but Im trying to scale down to the 2 type 3s, the 2 water cooled, and 1 bus. Luckally the water cooled cars run and drive so the type 3s are top priority when there isnt customer cars to work on.

Man, do I know that situation well. It can be a bit frustrating at times, but we gotta pay the bills first!! 8)

So this thread is long over due for an update. A little re-cap, the car is owned by my wife, I was building it for her. We are in the prosess of seperating so If I had to guess Ill probibly never get farther then I am now. I was really digging this build, mainly cause my wife was so excited to have Rocky all done. Now I want to burn that car. She isnt taking it with her so now Ive got to decide what to do with it. Im hurting so itll probibly sit in the corner of the shop until it gets parted out. Sorry guys, I know a couple of you seemed interrested in what I was doing, its just hard to keep up motivation on it now. If anything changes you guys will be the first to know
