removing rear apron and replacing it with a removable one?

Post by 72beetle »

Hello,

Is it feasable to remove the rear apron and replace it with a removable one to facilitate engine removal? I think that I read somewhere once that this area is part of the body strength and needs to be there welded in place. If there is a part that they sell to make this possible please respond. thanks ahead of time!!

I made my own rear apron removable by simply not tacking it in place. It's held on by the bolts that hold the wings in place, if your wings and mounts are in good condition I can't see any reason against this, I've had mine in for over a year now and never had any trouble. cut out the old one and bolt up a new steel panel, really makes life easy when it comes to pulling your engine! (bear in mind you'll have to remove your bumper too)

i dont think there is any one that actually sells any thing like you are talking about. but there are a few that have made their own set up including me.
I have seen one set up that was real cool and uses small square tubing and slips the apron in. I want to say it was Eric Allred that did that. but his web page doesnt seem to come up.
http://www.geocities.com/eaallred i think this is his web page but its not coming up right now.

then there is my way, a little more race oriented. since im not trying to hide my apron connections.

I used dzus fasteners welded onto the edge and plop it down. the down side to this is you have to trim the inner apron witch doesnt make for a good seal around the brest plate. but im a race car and that is not a big consern for me.
i have a few more pics of when i did the burn out kings car on my earlier updates on my web page at the 7-23-03 update. heavy picture page and will be real slow with dial up.

Actually, that is a 2" header by Al's Headers. Give John Troxell a call at foriegen unlimited and he has the hook up on those. 562-428-0106

I did mine like Muffler Mike. I didn't trim the inner sheet metal for the engine seal. I have to finish welding the brackets. The pieces in the top receptacle is a transfer punch I made.
