AutoTrans assistance

Post by RyanB »

Hi guys. I dont know a whole lot about the Type 3 automatic Transmission. I am hoping you can help identify a few things...

In this image, what are #1-5 for? Does #6 go to Manifold Vaccum or to Carb Vaccum?

In this image, I assume that #1 is the shift arm. However, I dont feel it lock into any positions. Is this normal?
What is the purpose of #2? Can it be removed for clearance?
What is the electrical connection #3?

Thanks for any assistance you can provide!

Plugs 1 to 5 are pressure test ports.Item 6 is the modulator valve, which is hooked to manifold vacuum, rather than ported vacuum. The shift lever movement is normal. Detenting is done at the shifter end, rather than inside the transmission.
In the second jpeg, 2 might be for the shift cable bracket, otherwise unused.. The electric terminal is for kickdown.

Kickdown on the electrical connection... really now? How is this done? Is there a momentary switch on the throttle when you get to a certain point to activate it?

Does anyone have a picture showing how the shift cable is connected to the shift arm there and what might hold it in place?

Thanks,

~Ryan

A lot of these test points will be of no use,but are as follows-#1,main pressure--#2,primary throttle pressure--#3,secondary throttle pressure--#4,main pressure(release side of 2nd gear brake band servo)--#5,main pressure(apply side of 2nd gear brake band servo) You missed one-on the housing just below the starter end cap screw in your pic-regulator pressure. The lug #2 is of no use for normal operation,so it can go.I cut mine off when I squeezed the trans into my Oval Beetle. The electric solenoid needs a 12volt supply from a throttle activated switch just B4 full throttle. The adjustment for the standard Type3 is for the switch to be activated when the throttle is 1mm away from full opening. As the Noof said-all the detents for the shift are done at the lever. At the lever end,the inner cable has a small round lug that slips over a pin with a circlip. The outer fits thru a bracket and is held with a nut.All the adjustment is done at the trans-the outer fits thru an "L" shaped bracket with a nut each side for adjustment and the inner goes into a special link which allows adjustment and also lets it all swivel.I adjusted mine by hooking everthing up and leaving it all loose at the trans end-put the lever into park-slide the trans arm back hard and tighten all up.I still haven't fitted a kickdown switch-was thinking to mount a micro switch on the throttle arm up front where the cable hooks in.

The type 4 had a nice one under the gas pedal built in. You floor it hard and the transmission shifts down. Ray
