Its a vw engine case that we imported from Brazil about 10 years ago. It has the back filled in behind #3 and is single relief.

Thanks Pat--- so I guess its nothing special then? Because single relief doesnt thrill me, everybody's case is welded behind #3 these days, and aint most new cases Brazillian? AND the fact that its 10 years old? I think Ill stick with a new one.

Also, is it true the AS21 is actually a better case than the AS41 as far as metalurgy? I was told (havnt actually read it) that Gene Berg did some testing of the 2 and concluded the AS21 is a better case. Any thoughts or opinions?

Some people think the as21 case is better. I have seen as many of them cracked as the as41 though. If it is a good deal and in good shape, plug the relief and use an external pressure relief. Being ten years old doesnt hurt anything.

No, not specifically. But, thats 10 years its been out there, so possibly 10 years worth of use. And "use" is what Im worried about, not simply the age of the case-- even if everything checks out ok. Im paranoid that way.

Thanks Pat for the info-- I really appreciate it!

Being "filled" behind #3 and "welded" behind #3 is way different..

Welding behind #3 warps the #1 main saddle... I never found a use to do it.

Take it to a machine shop and have it magna-fluxed to see if it has any weak spots or possible places cracks may occur. thats what i'd do i mean hell its only 30 bucks or so. If any good info comes to you about the as21 case let me know cuz thats what i just put together. Josh

Magnaflux won't work for a Magnesium or Aluminum case... You need a liquid penetrant inspection.... Only place to find that is around an aviation area.....

throwing the case into an oven finds more cracks than anything else...

Here's a picture of a Panzer Case as sold by CB Performance years ago.I just loved these case's.The back was cast filled in behind no.3 and was a tough case.We ran one in a 2275 circle track Bug for about 9 years before it developed stress cracks inside around the case savers and main webbing.

If this case is a single relief case, what makes it so good aside from it being filled in behind the #3 cylinder? I thought single relief cases were bad for using in HiPo engines or is it OK to use?

I've used both... never really noticed a huge difference.

So then it's no big deal! What about tapping it for full flow, will it have any adverse effects in oil pressure?
