009 is supposed to be the WORST for type 4, followed by the 010, the 050... the Mallory unilite is supposed to be the king.

Read my recent post on doing 80. It says it all, the Mallory is the biggest change since I built the engine. Major overall improvement.

distributor

ok then,

after reading the aircooled.net article "Choosing the Right Distributor", i can agree with the theory behind the mallory bing the best.

however, i tend to agree that "Frankly, though, finding the advance curve using this method isn't practical for most of us".
it can be another thing for me to play with in the future.

given also that i already have a brand new compufire kit, of the 009, 010 and 050, can i assume that

050 is the best of the three, as per ghostrider's and glenns advice.

Kim,

except that since I wrote that article, we have done enough testing to know almost exactly what Mallory combination you will need. It's just a matter of putting in the grey/grey springs, and limiting the advance so that your total advance and idle are where you want them, and you are done.

The 009s and 050s are junk, they are worn out new in the box. The 010s are a much heartier unit, but they are still not even in the same ballpark as a mallory. Yes, the 010 is better then a 009 or 050, but the ones that say a 010 is "as good as it gets" have simply not tried a Unilite yet. There is NO WAY an 010 or any other bosch dist is going to be on even ground with a Unilite. The 010 is a decent unit, and it's great for guys that want a retro look, but don't kid yourself into thinking a 30 year old distributor is going to operate as well as a state of the art production unit from 2004, even if you put a pertronix in the 010 it's still a losing game. No contest, period.

Totally agree with John, he set me up with the gray springs. Even if you get a used Malllory with Points, John can upgrade you to Unilite. I am not promoting the Mallory for any reason other then I was amazed as to the difference it made in my car. I was using 009's for years not realizing it was actually preventing me from enjoying my car fully. Not just in speed but total driving pleasue.

we have everything on the shelf EXCEPT for the Cent only Unilites, which should arrive next week (I spoke to Mallory today). I like the Unilites w/Vac for cars that have the proper vacuum ports (Dells and newer IDFs)
