Which 5-speed?

Post by thepreacher »

Anybody have any idea what this Porsche 5-speed is from? The number is 901 301.101.02. The guy says its from an early 70s 912, but I thought the 912s (except the 912E) were all in the 60s. Would this be a good tranny for a bug?

Thanks.

p.s. I hope its OK that I cross post this to the Transaxle Forum.

If its a 901 and I beleive it is, is has a weak first gear. But go over to www.germanlook.com there is a how to on the 901 and pro's and con's about it. Also on the German look site there is a break down of different five speeds.

On this site talk to Jake Raby, he is the moderator of Aircooled Technology, he has a 912E.

Taht number is just a casting number. there should be anotehr number of the form

90X/0Y, where

X=1 or 2
Y=1 or 2 (generally)

These will show if it came from a 911 or 912 and if it is a 4 or 5 speed.

Except for the 76 912E, the last 912 (with a 356 style engine) was made in 69.
