Type 4 Bus Megasquirt Shopping List

Post by channing81 »

Hello,
I have been reading on this site and the MS manuals for months deciding between MS and Weber 40 IDF's for my 2.0 Type 4 in my 74 Bus.
I recently acquired quite a few vanagon FI parts with a parts lot I purchased.
This has pushed me towards megasquirt.

I have put together a list below of everything I think I need. Does this seem accurate?

Thanks for looking,
Channing

-Megasquirt –II with V3 Board - https://www.diyautotune.com/product/meg ... lack-case/
-Build circuit for ignition with
TC4427AEPA
2x 15R 1/8W resistors
-Mario’s Type 4 Crank Trigger Package
Does this mount behind cooling fan with no modification needed?
-Mario’s “Coolant” Sensor
-GM IAT
-Searching for a TPS that will work with the vanagon throttle body
-LC-2 Wideband O2 Sensor
-GM IACV
-Relays and fuses for ECU, Injectors, Ignition, and fuel pump
-Jim Stim for Testing - https://www.diyautotune.com/product/jim ... assembled/
-USB adapter - https://www.diyautotune.com/product/usb ... nerstudio/
-Fuel System-
-Stock intakes and injectors from Vanagon
-Stock Vanagon Fuel Pump
-Need Return Tee for Pump
Ignition –
-LS1 or LS2 Coils with Wasted Spark Direct Fired from MS
OR
-VAG 032905106B
Depending on what I can find at the junkyard

Depending on if you plan on installing everything at once, I would suggest either tune fuel OR spark but not both at the same time.

Is that for easier troubleshooting? Makes sense.
I could use the stock coil and 034 distributor hooked up normally and get the fuel correct first.

Yes. Dealing with Megajolt, I re-flashed it about 20 times over the course of a few weeks until I got the spark map I wanted.

this is the way i have just done mine .
ignition first and then fuel .
if i would have done both together i would have had
problems getting it all to run at the same time

Mario's type4 crank trigger fits like a glove. You remove the spacer between the fan and the hub with the 36-1 wheel. I've been running one of these for 2 years w/ his LS2 coils. . . PERFECT.

I know that a lot of folks don't run relay boards, but I prefer them as it simplifies and cleans-up an install. One of Mario's wiring harnesses IMHO is a no-brainer too. It takes the daunting task of wiring your system and makes it a one hour job that is darned near fool-proof.

I have done fuel first, followed by ignition... in hindsight, should've done both at the same time. I have provided a base timing map (SVDA equivalent), to get you started.
Mario's Type4 crank kit is worth it.

Thanks for all of the help everyone.

Luftvagon: Thanks for posting the ignition map. That's a great starting point
I have been reading your threads here and on itinerant. Thanks for all of the info.

I'm sending my order now so I can get started on the build.

For now no IAC, I'm not quite understanding which one I need to use.

i did ignition first, once you have a safe map on there, fuel would be ok at the same time, if you have a known good map, thats fine, i started from scratch a few years ago.

having just started on fuel, there is ALOT more settings to faff over compared to ignition! IMO fuel is the harder of the two

i do see Mario now offers base tunes though for your setup to get you going.... that would be so nice to have! all those little settings you never know about before but will trip you up a bit, sorted!
