Mounting a trigger wheel?

Post by petew »

Ok, so I bought one of these from DIYautotune and it's time to mount it...

What I'm thinking currently is tapping a threaded hole in the pulley nut and bolting it to the front of the nut. Thoughts?

That is an option, but you will probably need some sort of alignment peg or a screw to keep the orientation the same if you have to take the pulley on and off from time to time. I went with a similar mounting pattern to this:

I think the nut will back out and you'll lose your timing reference. You have to have it mounted to something that's keyed to the crank, so it absolutely does not move around while the engine runs. Do it like above, or what I did was just eyeball the alignment and screwed it to the front of the pulley with nylon standoffs. You need to space it away from the pulley a bit to have room for the sensor.

This is a motorcycle chainwheel 36 tooth, you just have to remove 1 tooth.

Its cheap 100dkr=18 USD

Does it work? Those teeth seem very narrow, I'm not sure all sensors would pick them up.

You may find filling in with weld between 2 teeth works better with "smart" Hall sensors that do AGC etc.

The sprocket would probably work awesome with a VR sensor.
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

Sorry, I know I'm a bit dull, but I'm no clearer as to what to do re mounting the trigger wheel in my OP on my alloy pulley. Can someone throw me a bone here (on the other side of the world)?

-Get a rough idea of where you would like to have the VR sensor mounted on the engine case, then align the pulley with TDC, hold your trigger wheel to the pulley and remember your blank tooth will be 90 degrees to the right:

-Put some pencil or pen marks on the pulley of where you want the trigger wheel to be mounted
-Buy some small screws with nylon nuts to secure, you can do this with 4 or 5 mounting holes/screws
-Remove pulley from car and take everything to a machine shop
-Machine shop will put said pulley on centering machine and drill mounting holes, do a test fit before you leave. Shop should charge about 1 hour worth of work
-Remount on car and build VR sensor bracket or buy pre-made VR sensor brackets for sale here:

if you buy a pre-fabbed bracket though, be very sure of your measurements on the pulley before having the holes drilled
