$60 android tablet running MSDroid via USB on MS2Extra
I got a Pyle Astro 7" tablet for $60 on woot, you can get them for $80 on amazon. it came with a usb OTG cable so I hoped it would work with the MSDroid app. it didn't, until I ran a free usb host app which enabled usb host, something this tablet is not supposed to have. I plugged the USB OTG cable into my USB->rs232 and it linked right up! not bad for $60! I have EMI issues with this setup though. works great on the Stim and when not running but has connection issues once the engine fires. I might try a Parallax USB->rs232 adapter as this seems to have great reviews for EMI resistance and has fixed this issue for other people. the tablet has bluetooth so if I continue to have issues with the usb I can get a bluetooth adapter and run it through that although usb is cheaper and faster so I hope to get the issue resolved.

Cool.
You may also want to try a better quality cable esp for the long run.
I keep mentally having BT as a "must have" when looking at tablets, as I have a good BT dongle,
but USB does actually work 100X better.
I guess if you are using a phone as the logger it makes sense, but for serious tuning USB rocks.

zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

i like the idea of a tablet, you can fit some in your glove box and then have a good sleeper look, not needing to cut your dash for dials.....

since I don't have a radio, and don't think I would hear it anyways, I'm going to make a bracket that mounts in the radio hole and holds the tablet. sort of a permanent installation but could be removed with tools. this tablet has a separate charging plug so I can wire in a charger and usb. should be neat. also, if I do feel the need for tunes I suppose I could load the tablet up with mp3s and use an 1/8->rca cord to an amp. i have and amp... maybe I'll try it.

Makes me feel better just knowing that there is Android app as I opted for Android table over a laptop with muckysoft winders... And Santa loves me...

After having Tablet less than 24 hours found this GPS app sort of useful... Very basic....

And for hunting down the elusive WIFI access....

So you can find a access and monitor STF while stuck in mall with wife as she shops...

If you have an Android smart phone, you can root it. Once rooted most ROMs allow for the phone to become a wireless hotspot. Then you have wireless for your tablet.

Re: $60 android tablet running MSDroid via USB on MS2Extra
today it warmed up so I tried out the tablet again. I tried a different usb cable with no change. then I tried attaching my rs232->usb directly to the MS2 and attached the tablet to that using only the 6" USB on the go cable. that worked! I was able to run the engine and stay connected. before it would disconnect as soon as the engine fired. I logged some data while I let the engine warm up. not sure if I should get a high quality shielded usb cable, or wait until I get rid of the distributor as that is probably the source of my problems.

Probably best quality USB shielded cable money can buy would help.... How to identify it for having best shielding may be the real mystery though...
Also maybe some serious filtering of input to your ECU (big capacitor) like the audio boys do....

Re: $60 android tablet running MSDroid via USB on MS2Extra
I already have a large cap on my ecu power. I also have one across my fuel pump and scavenge pump as they were creating noise. I had major reset issues in the beginning and used an o scope to to track down most of the noise. I may have to do it again to see what is messing with my USB signal. I'm considering making a super shielded rs232 cable to bring the signal to my USB converter right at the tablet.

Re: $60 android tablet running MSDroid via USB on MS2Extra
I have an Android tablet that I bought for $80 that I connect to my MS2Extra with, using the BT adapter, (not purchased through EFIAnalytices FWIW), on the MS box. I also run Shadowdash on the tablet. I've not tried the USB cable because the BT will connect to my phone, Nexus7 tablet, and this newest tablet. I still have the rs232 cable and USB adapter nearby so I can hot swap between them when using a Windows computer for VEAL. I wish someone would get some form of VEAL functioning with Android. Still, being able to watch and adjust my MS settings with my tablets is AWESOME. If anyone is looking to try this, I highly recommend the Nexus7 tablet. Built in BT, mini USB, and GPS are all built in. Also, if you get the slightly older ones, (like mine), they are pretty affordable.

You are far better off with a really good serial cable and an as short as possible USB cable.juki48 wrote:I already have a large cap on my ecu power. If you have an MS3, the latter is ~required to use the onboard FTDI, and it works well.
I have both set up, the serial has a BT adapter on it, just don't have both on at the same time or hilarity will ensue. (or cussing. Or both)
