Mexican Beetle 1600i Flat spot help!

I have a 1998 Mexibug that is suffering from a pronounced flat spot at low revs which makes it not much fun to drive.

I have cleaned out all the breather pipes, replaced Relay 30, replaced the idle control valve and still the problem persists.

I obviously need to get the car plugged into VAGCOM software but I haven't been able to find anyone in London or the UK that has the right software/3 pin plug and experience to help with this matter.

I know Phade is the expert on Mexibugs FI but I haven't been able to get hold of him. Does anyone know of anyone else in the UK (or London) that could help?

Thanks in advance people!

Paul

Paul,

What was the cause of your flat spot?

Cheers.

After having the ECU chipped by Manfred in Germany and changing every sensor and vacuum pipe I ditched the ECU and distributor for Megsquirt and Wasted Spark and now the car flies! Quite a significant difference to say the least.

Blimey, that's an extreme swap.

Before you changed to megasquirt, did you change the factory coil pack & or distributor? wondering if your problem was in there.

Thanks for your quick reply.

Jim

Yes - leads, everything. Other people have the same issue - you cannot hold revs steady between idle and 1150 RPM.

My car would idle at 820 and do nothing but lean out a little before jumping to 1150rpm. There was a clear hole in the rev range at low revs. Makes for very lumpy traffic driving!

When you changed to the megasquirt did you keep the injectors?

People seem to start out with the mexican injection and end up changing everything eventually

Hi Paul - sorry for the very late reply - don't get notifications when I get a message annoying and hadn't checked back in a while.

Yes, I kept the same injectors and most of the original wiring loom. I could have kept the distributor but decided to remove it and go with wasted spark set up.

The car runs lovely, lots of power and evenly distributed through the rev range. The original ECU was fine but there were flat spots all over the place.
