30 Pict 2 problems

Post by pete453 » Mon Nov 07, 2011 11:02 am

Is it normal for fuel to dribble out of the overflow tube when the engine is at idle?

Are you talking the overflow vent tube???

If so ...No that is not normal and you have a bad float valve or too high a float setting.

I have heard that some of the new Solex float valves are not very good .

Run it for a bit, then shut it down and pull the carb top off and check your fuel level. It could be the float is set too high due to the fact that some gaskets are thicker than the original one and that makes the float level higher if you do not add a thicker washer or even two washers under the float valve.

Some of the rebuild kits will tell you which washer to put under the valve. If that fails take a micrometer and check the width of them. I run my 34 Bocar with a 0.33 washer and it calls for a 0.20 washer. I get overflow with my turbo if I use the thinner one.

You could try a thicker washer and see if that takes care of the issue. The rebuild kits should have a couple in there and I would bet they are different thicknesses.

Thanks for the reply and yes it's the vent tube that's dribbling fuel. I didn't think it was normal, but I can't figure out how to stop it. I set the fuel pressure to 2.8 PSI, tried two different floats, one used valve and two other new ones with the recommended washer thickness and some thicker sizes. One of the floats has a brass hinge and I bent it to lower the level. The level was defiantly lower with that float but it still dribbled. I must have had the top off that carb 15-20 times this weekend and I still get the dribble from the vent tube. I was getting 22mpg around town and now I'm down to 17 and this carb is driving me crazy.

What is the fuel level when you pull the top off of the carb??? Is it really high like it is over flowing??

If so you have a float valve problem or else your float is sinking.
