Hello, I was hoping someone can explain the difference in a 1961 beetle horn circuit and a 1962?
I have a 61 I am redoing and finding a good 61 wheel and horn button has proven to be impossible. I was researching on line and WWest has some good insite but when it comes to 62 Current flows starting at the steering coupler, steering box side, where a wire is attached and feeds through the center of the steering column to the horn button/ring. Please note that these years did not use a ground strap that crossed over the steering coupler. When depressed, the horn button feeds current to the steering tube. At the end of the tube, under the gas tank you will find a male connector. Attached onto this connector is a brown wire that leads directly to the horn thus completing the circuit. I can figure out how you get power to the steering box side. Can some please help me with this.
Thanks Randall

lots of horn wiring info here: http://www.thebugshop.org/bsfqhorn.htm
if I understand correctly on your 61 the steering shaft is grounded, while on a 62 it would be hot

You want to get GROUND to horn... POWER is constant to horn directly from fuse panel...
Here is type 1 "61" diagram...

Here is Type 1 "62" diagram....

Basically circuit is same, it just depends how Horn Button gets its ground (braided strap over steering shaft donut or wire up center tube) and returns ground back down outside of column from horn button to actual horn....
Horn always has 12 volts hot from fuse to it....
This is only graphic I have that shows some clarity on VW horn circuit...
