I am currently building a '71 baja that will have a considerable electrical draw with extra lights, etc... This prompted me to reconsider my current alternator. (55 amp).
When I looked into different amperage alternators all had the same part number AL82N. I was told that all start with the 55 amp and simply rewind them to support the higher amperage. This leads me to my question.
I was set on the 95 amp alternator (bigger is better mentality) but was told that the winding on a 95 amp is too much and the alternator will have a shorter life span (heat issues). "They" said I want the 75 amp... stating it was the best of both worlds.
So, is there validity in what I was told, or does this make any sense what-so-ever?

With a baja, it's likely there's a HUGE amperage added...
My opion would be to split the auxillary stuff from the necessary items.
I know it's ghetto... we used to run 3 in the desert... one for the basics.. one for the lights... one just in case we see buzzards flying and we're 50 miles from the freeway.
Could be mounted directly to the cage..

it all depends on how you use your ride. remember, your lights will only be on at night. If you run for long periods during the day and only a short duration at night I would opt for the smaller unit.
Heat from the ALt? that is laughable, unless you are tlaking about undersizing it and the alt has to work very hard to keep things charged. that will build heat in the unit.
So if all alts are the same why not just run a HUGE monster? simple.....it take HP to turn the thing. the bigger the output the more hp to generate juice that may not be needed.
have you measured your actual load with everything ON?

... now there you go with that "making sense" stuff The answer is no, because I am in the build-up stage and have yet to get things fired up. I have figured the draw on all "accessories" and think I am in the ballpark. However, is there a baseline draw that a stock system would require (how's that for vague) then add-in accessory draw as a starting point?SUbuggy wrote:have you measured your actual load with everything ON?
