Usually “heavy duty” is a vacant term derived my soleness marketing people. See also “Turbo” for abuses of language.

Is both your generator body and voltage regulator marked 38 amp? Or is it a 6 volt with a 12 o.d..?
Yeah some may call it overkill, but you can't have too much overkill.

Wow, that sounds like a standard equipment or optional high output generator. Once common in '71 bus. The more common is the 30 amp.

So, do you have the dished backing plate tin (to shroud), normally cast (thin) pulley, and matching voltage regulator? The metal stuff is to correct the length of that generator body as it is longer than the 30A body. And the 38A regulator is the 30A versions bigger brother.
Yeah some may call it overkill, but you can't have too much overkill.

I can probably hook you up with the regulator, dished sheetmetal, and the special fan hub & spacers, but I sent the only decent pulley I could find to Vgonman (I don't think he ever paid for it, glad you reminded me).
The pedestal/strap, fan, and sheetmetal "ring" are all the same. You can use the 30A (30 019) regulator but should have a 38A (30 021) unit to get maximum output from that generator.

So how do you tell if the fan hub is 38 amp?

The flange on the 38A hub is offset all the way to one end, making it look like a stovepipe hat. You also need some thick spacers (IIRC three of them) to go under the nut.
If they're Bosch regulators, the amperage will be stamped on one of the "legs" i.e. 14V 30A or 14V 38A.

38amp generator

Post by neil68 »

I am running a 38 amp generator in my '68 Beetle (2017 cc motor) with the correct 38 amp voltage regulator. I tried running a 30 amp regulator, but after continual problems, switched to the 38 reg and it's been three years of trouble-free driving. As I recall, the Bosch 38 amp generators have a GR-17 code (instead of GR-15). I purchased the new Brazilian 38 amp regulator from www.CIP1.com

I'm running the later FI doghouse fan shroud and the hub from my old '69 Westy (I believe 69-71 buses had the 38 gen). For a pulley, I'm using the vintage Santana for proper fan belt alignment :)

In Aus and the UK at least, the 1600 engine continued as an option up to around 73/74.

Telecom (former name for the current Telstra - main telephone provider in Aus) used a lot of VW vans, and ALL of them were supplied with the 1600 engine - not the 1700/1800/2000 units. All had the 38 amp generator (until replaced by the alternator in 73 I think), so the 38amp generator is reasonably common here in Aus.

Yes - it does need the 38 amp regulator (plus the correct tinware etc to fit it to the bug engine). You'll have continual trouble if you try to use the bug's 30 amp regulator with a 38 amp generator.
